I mean Stan probably is one of the best rap songs ever but he has not done a good job the past 5 years of making us want to defend his legacy.
Its one of my favorite songs ever from the storytelling all the way down to the scribbles in the background.

this was it - still think it's an all time a***ysis of a man who doesn't really get enough of em beyond the standard
also i'm pretty sure i listened to teenage love like 90 times after my first 'real' breakup as a teen but then only thing that cheered me up was that
anyway, dead outta order
came in with a sheepskin her ex-lover bought her
who gave you that? “my ex” i said “who?”
believe she had the nerve to say “you can wear it too”
line
If I’m a corporate suit at Fox I’m greenlighting a Victorian-era comedy of manners written and starring Eddie Murphy Slick Rick right around 1989
It ends up making a post-Trading Places fortune and eventually birthing a jukebox musical by Lin Maneul called Teenage Love thirty years later that imagines the characters in the song are real
The beat, the spooky emotional hook, the rain/ thunder in the back that sets dreary mood, the pencil scratches as he writes the letters
How vividly he depicts dudes moods / mental instability and increasingly irritated tone til he’s actually irrate and suicidal on top of the scene where he actually does commit that.
The depiction of his drunken state of mind at the end, and his interaction with the girl in the suicide scene
Em’s point of view and twist ending.
I don’t think there’s ever been a song that so succinctly illustrated a situation that was funny, weird, sad, and intense all at the same time.
Multiple characters come to life and one dies by the end of it which leaves you with a weird gut feeling.
S*** was so skillfully done. There’s really no weaknesses whatsoever and I dont think any other rapper would’ve ever been capable of creating a song of this much expertise and graciousness. 20 years later it’s just as fresh as the day it came out.

Just realized he misremembered the title of Phil Colin’s track..
He said you know that Phil Colins song “in the air of the night!?”

Em is f***in genius man.. the comic relief smack dead in the middle of the dramatic ass scene

Very well put, I think he’s well due for a critical reappraisal any time someone with a byline wants to explore the nebuluous zone between his Great Adventures and Art of Storytelling 4. Really a foundational, deep-impacting talent in ways he’s not currently recognized for
Idk if I’m imagining a Passionweiss long-form on his deportation saga or not but we need another holistic examination, couldn’t hurt

our first podcast riff would be me saying in retort with lesser effort well i'd prefer a 'my dinner with andre' remake starring slick rick and devin the dude but then realising it's just a dj vlad couch talk

f*** the nerds must have got to it and edited but his wiki page used to have like 50 bullet point list 'tribute section' that was everything from like nas - artist to the most obscure of artists reference to his chains in one line. i also remember there being a lot of nice nicki references from both lines to interviews
If you're into that style of rap, you should check out Scarface.
This song conveys a lot of the emotions you described.
