See, I agree, but you'd also need to list the song or songs that made Kanye West Kanye West (who we know him to be today)
So you can decide between: established in Rap or established commercially (or a mix of both: Touch The Sky, for example)
IMO anyway
i dont think his stature in pop music has much to do with his calling card as an artist. Or do you think that as a rule that once an artist is established they start folding in on themselves? That they begin to stop making work about whatever they were making work about before, and instead start making work about themselves?
All Falls Down
Conscience lyrics about fashion and consumerism but from a guy whos clearly and rich and still wants to stunt. Lyrics are powerful and sometimes funny, kind of sad too, but empowering in a way. Sample based, banger, shoutouts Chicago. Idk how this one didn’t come up sooner
Ghost Town for some reason. The guitar line that opens up the main part of the song is just so iconic
Otis. Dude made one of the hardest beats in hip-hop history in less than an hour. Mixes soul sampling Kanye with the braggadocio of his later albums.
could be bound 2 tbh
callback to his old roots with the sample, but also modern enough to be representative of new ye
really hard to have one definitive ye song though - for the most part he's always evolving his sound so its impossible to get all parts of him in one song... however, you could say TLOP is the definitive ye album as it had elements from all his eras up to that point
