I completely agree with you. I love the og films now because I appreciate the innovation and lucas creating the word but imo the new trilogy is higher quality on every level except innovation. Way better acting in the new trilogy. Way better visuals (obviously due to technical advancement). Way better script writing. Way better cinematography. Even Mark Hamills acting is by far better in TLJ than any film prior.

What I will say about the ogs though is that they had a crazy amount of imagination and fantasy that the new films seem to miss imo. All the crazy aliens and ideas lucas had in his films. He really is a genius. He just isnt a great script writer and director in the sense of directing actors on how they should act lol.

the last jedi is some of the only interesting story telling in the entire series.

unlike 90% of this franchise, it doesn't bank on using things that the audience thought were cool 20 years ago to get a reaction.

it gives luke an actual character arc, and actually has something to say about the jedi/sith and the relationship between the two. the prequels are so annoying about it being so black/white when it was written to be so gray.

the fans that wanted rey to be luke's daughter were the same people the got hyped when boba fett got a backstory, yoda got a lightsaber etc etc.

And I used to be one of those TLJ defenders claiming it to be the best since ESB, make up all sorts of excuses and reasoning as to why it revolutionized and pushed the franchise forward. But once I lived with it and revisited it.... man, oh man. It all kind of faltered ngl

Skywalker saga was already built ground, it was never the place for SNL gags and 21th Century politics. Subverting expectations are welcomed if done right, but in this case it was never earned. A true subversion is to something that was always there but overlooked. It loosed a sense of continuity, and overall just felt inconsistent to the overall story. And don't even get me started on the portrayal of Luke lmao

Where's the stakes? Among all the MCU humor and Battlestar Galactica worship, there was no real weight to it. Hard to see big SW fans prefer the storybeats and tone of TLJ over others tbh. There's a lot of losers out there bashing Rian trying to make him and fans's lives miserable, that's not me. Why I bring this up now is only cause of the wild ass s*** y'all be posting itt lol

If we're going with Rian's set up and vision then yea he should've. But his whole storyline and adventure in the film was quite bad to begin with tho lol, so I'm more forgiving since his character was already fumbled by then
