agreed on the starboy part
i think i still like after hours more than dawn fm but yea they’re pretty even to me both amazing
after hours might just still hit a little bit more for me tho
Starboy less radio bait than BBTM??? Dawn literally had FM in it's name how was it less radio than AH?
Starboy felt more like an album whereas bbtm was more like a radio bait playlist
Even Abel would probably agree w this he was trying to make a commercial album
only cause it has FM in its name doesn't mean it's more radio friendly?? How shallow are you?
After Hours had Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears. They're much more desgned for the dumb masses than Take My Breath or Sacrifice.
It was easily more radio friendly though. After hours had a few radio cuts and then some that wouldn’t work on the radio dawn fm whole thing felt for the radio

He’s said that directly about both Starboy and BBTM tbf
EP
I’m pretty sure he called it an album though and it’s it’s own chapter in the saga
Starboy is better than BBTM yeah. Dawn FM is also better than After Hours this is true.

Hmm
I feel like w Starboy he put a lot more effort into the persona and the narrative and the cohesion
Like Starboy was more of a radio album but it felt like he made it for him vs bbtm felt like he made it for the clout

Here’s the direct quote i actually feel the opposite tbh BBTM feels a bit more cohesive than SB but both are all over the place

I just feel like all his albums are trying to tell a story except for bbtm. Like he’s playing a character in all of them but bbtm feels like it got changed or butchered and lost it’s way along the way, even though it has some phenomenal highs
That’s why it’ll always be my least favorite Weeknd albim

The pic, cool find.
If he really enjoys doing albums, he needs to do better.
AH/Dawn were a step in the right direction, but he didn't do enough, especially considering the fact he has 10+ years experience

How could he do better in your opinion
I thought both AH and Dawn were very cohesive and felt like complete experiences, where each song was a chapter in a book, not an individual short story.
I wanna know because I’m working on an album myself, and I was actually taking some cues from After Hours in particular on how to make it cohesive and full.

Off the top of my head:
Better songwriting, and better production/instrumentals.
A higher standard for his music, melodies, lyrics, a higher standard from what he expects from himself and those around him in the studio.
Michael's known for his work ethic.
There are many stories, but I'll mention one. It is said MJ would study the Beatles and break down every note which felt like he had an emotional connection with each chord.
From MJ's advice to Kobe: "You have to stay focused. If you wanna be one of the all-time greats you have to study the all-time greats. You have to be obsessive about what you do and how you do it"

Thank you, this is helpful.
I personally really loved the lyrics on After Hours, but some of Dawn did leave a little to be desired to me in that regard.
As for the production, while I do think that both albums knocked it out of the part in that regard, I can also imagine a world where they could be better, even if just by a little.
So I guess the main takeaway is that what held the projects back for you is less about the cohesion of the projects, and more about just the general song quality lacking to you. So I can’t get too lost in the weeds making a big cohesive thing; I still need to focus on making every song the best it can be!

Everything you listed he can do “better” is completely subjective and can have a multitude of meanings depending on what you see as “better”.
What do you mean by better songwriting? Do you mean more storytelling or more playing around with the form or structure of the song?
By better instrumentals and production do you mean different instruments and sounds or a more polished production route? Less polished production route?
A higher standard for his music and melodies? Is a better melody something that’s more ear candy or more technically flashy? Does he need to have more chord changes in the songs in order for them to meet that “higher standard” ? How do you, me, or him measure the standard of what he expects in the studio. Should he start accepting only Quincy Jones levels of input for his music?
