such a good song navy is the truth
Really hoping for the best on the 22nd. MIKE collab or not I’m in
I mean woods and Elucid had some ridiculous verses on both Paraffin and Shrines, and Ka did his thing this year like usual—I definitely think they all have topped this for me
Don't think I've heard a verse which matches this ever since it dropped

Lost my dawg to the staircase, took the highest spot on the podium
Ghostin' niggas, probably smokin' to the thought of knowin' us
They loss a part of growin' up
Spurned us, learned I had to keep a wedge to get out of the rough
Fuses clipped for nuisance, disrespect 'cause we carried enough
I promised I'd bury the grudge, preparing the carrion grub
Larry Oops, I was lost in the alley, in the air but not sunk
I spun 'til the lost of my grandmama buried the dunk
Send 'bout a prayer a month, through the above
Niggas moody but imbued with the funk
Better s*** to do than play with food
The rhyming Rubik's for fun
But I do what I want, ayy
And I rue what it was later, a looter as such
Confusingly up with paper
I'm shootin' ones with the judge if he sentence my brother
Been with him, muzzled us from the cradle
So we goin' to the grave with this s***
If we join the second line
The ancestors'll hand us a drum to load the second time
Somethin' scary 'bout airin' out the s*** I compressed
The fare gettin' fairer now, the cost is
An arm, leg, an arm, leg, and a head
In all bread, the conquest for text, I'm pawnin' the rest
My Bompton partner spawn when donning the red
I'm all on they neck 'til my car park is pardoning French
Spar with a few niggas, sparkin' at the larger percentage
What's alternate when the losses come as often as wins?
And imposter clique thick
Don't got a job, I only ball off pick-six
I'm fraught with friction, in July, we had s*** lit as Christmas
Hollins been sensed niggas been lyin', but we ain't gon' mention
Boo hit the stu' and started sweating', told her this the kitchen
You knew the rules
And we knew how to shoot the loopholes, jugo, beaucoup loot
And my kin and 'nem got the cannon, you gon' juke or boogaloo?
I been spinnin' around the answer
Non-definitive, I just crammed it
Outward gifted, inward feel damned
I took my lumps, my bruises, grooves
What the f*** are you to do?
What do you guys think @DwindlingSun @marcusg @deepsleep @WRU @fritzdork @reptxn @viscera @philanthropist @putney_swope
Heard this one some months back, I gotta revisit the whole album during my holiday break. Dead ass I’m still upset with Earl for giving us “East”

lol East is wild but even on my first listen I just saw it as a really deranged psychedelic beat tbh, it gets way too much hate. Overall FOC is lowkey my fav Earl project at this point
I prefer Earl on this
Both were great tho
lowkey disrespectful to say he was competing with Mavi here but Earl part def slept on, love the mixing
plus
"I keep the tears out my mind reach
I put my fears in a box like a prayer that you won't read
Spirited Away the whole thing"

Mavi sounded like he consciously put a lot of effort to kill it, meanwhile Earl's flow was carefree, laid back and unique, complimented the beat so nicely, just makes my soul feel good ya know.
I think Elucid on King Tubby is a fair match for this @beflygelt

my fav on Shrines, but I dunno I guess I'm just not on the wavelength with Elucid's lyricism so far. He snapped tho. Also it's f***ing wild woods is referencing This is Water in his verse, never noticed that lol. Never thought I'd hear about DFW on a non-corny rap track. Kinda fitting tho, DFW called rap "the most important stuff happening in American poetry today" all the way back in 1990
Shrines got some wild references, Ferreira shouting out Black Orpheus right after Kafka also comes to mind
crazy how mavi renegaded earl's whole album with that
arguably best verse, but Earl was spitting spitting on 74, East, OD, Cookies and Whole World too
"Mav getting the torch, Mach lit it"

Elucid’s rhymes aren’t even on this plane tbf. He’s on a different level.
And that’s funny you point that out about woods—I definitely liken him to DFW for his postmodernist sensibilities and dark humor. But yeah he’s your man for literary references, as we know. My friend gifted me a tiny book version of that speech which was so clutch listened to it dozens of times prior.

Yeah this is verse of the year for me still.
Others I think worth mentioning:
ELUCID on Flavor Flav
woods on The Eucharist; War Stories
Ka 1st verse on Pray; Patron Saint
Marci on Sins of the Father
amani on Hell Juice
Akai on something, so many come to mind. Natural Leaf I still think is one of the best verses of the year. Candor too.

lol woods retweeted and liked the DFW quote, Craven too

Sounds rly intriguing what you say about woods and post-postmodernism, not deep enough in there to see it but I'll keep an eye out now and yeah like Today, I Wrote Nothing he's def the man for lit references (wasn't his mom an English professor or sumn too?)
And also yeah This is Water is goat. Very important text, highkey gave me a completely new perspective when I first heard the speech. Infinite Jest is also still the book which had the most profound influence on my thinking tbh

Great list. I’d add on Ka on In Good Hands, Family Dollar, and Old Justice
Not to take away from this excellent Mavi verse tho

Oh nice
I think she was, and he’s mentioned being into reading and writing heavy since he was a kid. Also, have you read his short story? everyseeker.com/billy-woods I had no idea he wrote fiction, tho I think this is autobiographical.
Yeah straight up. Every commencement speech after that should’ve just been replaced with that audio lol. And that’s crazy you tackled Infinite Jest—I’m way too intimidated. I’ve read Brief Interviews and Oblivion, but I think I was too young to have fully grasped them. E Unibus Pluram is brilliant tho.
