the common good is one of the main principles of stoicism
Alright but it explicitly argues that you shouldn't make any "complicated theories" about the world, doesn't that stand in the way of questioning why the common good is not being pursued in the world?
I'm not well read on stoicism at all tho, just saying.

I believe that part applies more to putting an unnecessary amount of value on emotions you experience during the proces of overthinking about the past or the future. Stoicism emphasizes living in the moment and being in the present as much as possible.
Sooo basically self control?
Said simply, yes. Radical self control.

I think what you're quoting is just ops interpretation of stoicism. Before you critique that I would read some of the teachings. The Enchiridion is very short but basically distills stoicism into 50+ lessons. It's like an operating manual
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is a MUST read book for everyone.
Bro wrote everything for himself, like a diary and never intended to publish it.He was a Roman Emperor lol.
Changed my life for good and cant stop recommending it to everyone.
dk if this has been shared before, but it's a must watch for anyone who wants to get into stoicism
Edit: fixed link
y'all read ryan holiday's books?
The obstacle is the way is nice. I'd also toss atomic habits in with it. Great books about becoming the best person you can be.

That was an incredible lecture thank you for sharing.

Np, everyone itt or anyone interested in stoicism as a whole should watch
I've been a practicing stoic for the past 8 months and It has really helped with my anger issues, specifically what Epictitus said about looking at our own shortcoming when we get upset with others not setting the standard.

Oh absolutely. Might be the best lecture I ever done watched. No uhhmmms, no slides, no cards, just pure knowledge being dropped with some serious passion and eloquence.
Just read this passage from Meditations and I gotta say almost nobody, even myself, practices this especially online. Mfers will argue semantics to death and quote a type with jordanlaff and it's like dam. Can't we just ha e a discourse?
"Not to be constantly correcting people, and in particular not to jump on them whenever they make an error of usage or a grammatical mistake or mispronounce something, but just answer their question or add another example, or debate the issue itself (not their phrasing), or make some other contribution to the discussion-and insert the right expression, unobtrusively."

"Don't waste the rest of your time here worrying about other people -- unless it affects the common good. It will keep you from doing anything useful. You'll be too preoccupied with what so-and-so is doing, and why, and what they're saying, and what they're thinking, and what they're up to, and all the other things that throw you off and keep you from focusing on your own mind."
A quote from Meditations that really resonated with me.
