The number of participants who completed the anonymous questionnaire was N = 264. Most participants were women (87%) in the age-span of 25–34. The questionnaire was created in Qualtrics, and participants were recruited via word-of-mouth on Facebook

^bruh this is a Qualtrics survey with people recruited from Facebook

western society is missing the spiritual aspect of life for sure

Nothing against the occult but the vast majority who say they are spiritual are just following and consuming trends instead of looking within.

People who are truly spiritual are NOT in the slightest judgmental to someone who is an “incompatible “zodiac sign like so many people are.

People who are truly spiritually grounded do NOT condone their toxic behavior due to the position of planetary bodies in an astral chart.

I could go on and on with these discrepancies.

So I agree the west is seriously lacking when it comes to being a spiritual society, I would like to add my two cents that astrology is essentially a guise to feed the ego of the flesh and it’s working very well.

264 is actually abdecent enough sample size when p<0.001, the sample size is not the issue when the effect size is significant to that extent, it's more so about the quality of the sample.

You can criticize the sample being biased, but what variables would influence it exactly and in what direction would that causality be? I would argue that to study this as a cultural phenomenon in the West this is pretty much the most relevant demographic.

There needs to be more research done to see if it's replicable for sure tho.

that’s precisely what ive been saying man

spirituality within the west has been commodified, and people are buying into it instead of actually engaging in spiritual practices and broadening their worldview, hell, some of them even fall into spiritual narcissism where they think being spiritual makes them better than the average person

the whole crystal donning angel number banging crowd really gives the whole concept a bad rap tbh.

i think astrology can be a fun and somewhat useful tool for some people if they fr want to try to outline their personalities and improve themselves (albeit obviously can be subject to confirmation bias but blah blah…)

the groups that excuse their behavior based on their chart obviously have some overarching mental problems that shouldn’t really be pinned on astrology itself if you ask me.

You mean something like a dark personality trait of self-centeredness that leads people to seek faults in other people and circumstances instead of their own?

    er uh yeah

astrology isn’t designed for these types of people to excuse their behavior, if astrology didn’t exist they’d simply blame something completely different for their behavior (oh im off my medication, oh you made me do this, i only did this because you made me feel like this)

it even happens with something that is purportedly scientific (MBTI, although it isn’t)

Well that trait I was describing is narcissism :kanyewell:

But I agree that it isn't necessarily something inherent to astrology itself. Like I said on page one it's a specific demographic that participated in the study and the results aren't generalizeable. My guess is that you wouldn't find this correlation in cultures where a belief in astrology isn't the new trendy thing to do for a specific demographic like it is in the West.

yeah i know scratchin the d**** didn’t fry my brain that much 🙄

most likely not, it’d be fascinating to see how it would apply in other cultures. the west emphasizes and worships individualization so anything that falls into its lens is going to end up pared down to only include what can benefit me me me me over what it could mean for the world at large

i think even something like the law of attraction has been distorted from its initial intentions (i read somewhere that it’s actually supposed to be a large group of people that are supposed to manifest s*** together and oftentimes not just for one’s own ends) versus willing something into existence by yourself, for yourself

But yeah I agree, I'm sure this form of astrology you find in the west is a total b******ization of what it was originally, as is usually the case.

And the thing is that there's an increase in belief in astrology, so that means that there is something driving people to holding those beliefs. It's not really surprising that there is an increase in the belief in astrology if it correlates with narcissism, since there's also been an increase in narcissism in the west over the years.

any particular reason for the increase in narcissism? 🤔
