It also tapped into a very late 90s zeitgeist of fear for the millennium and the way that technology was becoming a bigger part of everyone's lives, a kind of alienated feeling that's really well-captured on the album

It felt like the moment, I feel similarly about Blonde too, tho it's very personal there's something very 2010s about that album

Yea I get the impression Ok Computer was very representative of late 90s pop culture and social commentary

I just want someone with better knowledge of the specifics to put into words how artistically the album’s lyrics and sound represented that

It’s a little dated now, so it kind of sounds silly to say in some regards, but at the time it did really open the doors for what we consider to be popular “indie” music today. It sold very well, is excellently produced, takes chances that works. It’s a very fine line between hits and experimental and they nailed it on the head. The lyrics and music, to me, were amplified in American culture from post 9/11 hysteria. Lot of “dystopian future society” messages that resonated at the time. And it’s a precursor for what comes later, Kid A, Amnesiac, In Rainbows all perfect albums.

They released the sessions and it’s like 50 hours of music. Super cool stuff in those if you ever get the chance to check it. The process that album went through alone is worth a study.

Maybe not but even in terms of pushing bounderies, OKC doesn't seem to be doing something that different from other Alt Rock bands from around the era. Kid A in retrospect is a more adventurous album (for Radiohead) which i think sometimes OK gets that praise instead

It's definitely a super catchy and consistent album tho

The people that dfw post-Kid A radiohead just tack all of radiohead’s post-Kid A accolades onto OKC. Lmao

The musicianship on every song is insane. The writing on every song is insane. Radiohead’s ability to make rapid changes and unorthodoxy sound so seamless and simple is probably best exemplified on here. Its an audiophile/guitar head’s wet dream as fat as pedalboards and chord theory goes. They mastered tension and release on this in a way that we now know as the foundation of their artistic output. Definitely has become a bit overrated and cliche…not even in my top 4 RH albums, but its a 10/10 and one of the best albums of all time.

    Bingo

it was completely different to any other album out at that point. niggas forged a path for a lot more stuff like coldplay and softer s*** to come through into the mainstream with that album. it’s one of those genre defining albums that took everyone by surprise. you gotta also put it into context that these niggas was known as the creep dudes and all of a sudden they’re making songs like paranoid android? you kidding me?

    Was it primarily the production?

i’d say yes because the production and just tbh the vibe of the album in general like the lyrics videos etc was different to the alt rock scene in the 90s. at that point grunge was on its dying legs and niggas was wondering what was gonna happen to rock then ok computer comes along and shows you a different sound to britpop/ grunge.
