apparently Smash World Tour has been in good graces with Nintendo all year, and their only stipulation was that the tournaments couldn't run any modded versions (Slippi and PM)

why cancel just a week or so before the end of the circuit man

I used to be heavy on the smash scene some years ago

Panda is just an esports organization but they set up a "Panda Cup" which got the blessing of Nintendo, a big first for the scene that a lot of people were hesitant to celebrate. Simultaneously, the scene was creating the "Smash World Tour" which was a circuit that was worldwide and had a ton of tournaments work together. They also wanted Nintendo's blessing but it Nintendo kinda gave them cold feet.

Now Nintendo essentially said you dont have to cancel the Smash World Tour but any unlicensed tournaments can't be run. (Essentially canceling the smash world tour and bringing any tournament without Nintendo's blessing into question)

That's like an overview kind of and the history is kind of deep but I think a ton of youtubers have done quick summarys on the situation.

this story is getting a surprising amount of traction. i guess mainly because it really does set up a horrendous precedent for really all competitive game streams (even tho really no other developer actively hates is base like nintendo)

i have 0 hope in nintendo changing, but it could be interesting if this all forces panda to address/change something
