How it all occured goes against everything you would want from a universe. Its part of why from beginning how I said there needs to be a Feige separe from Gunn. Gunn shouldnt be the Feige and the cirector of movies. Because then you run into some of the same issues as snyder. But this is honestly in my opinion even worse. Because this is like Walter Hamada was doing but its Gunn doing it. In terms of studio interference. It sets up craig to look bad when a lot of it wasnt even his choice. Making a woman of tomorrow comic adaptation wasnt his passion project he hasnt even read the comic ilike that . Its what he was told he is doing. With a script not written by him then arguing over parts of his movie.

Craig wasnt told to direct this movie. They offered it to him and after he read it, he said he was blown away and decided he wanted to do it so he had to pitch himself in order to win the role of director

He had agency, he just didnt make a good movie when it came down to it

Him liking the script but not knowing the comic is still some level of incongruence to me. Also how much of the script changed from what we saw. Because Gunn and Craig both said they liked the script but test screenings and reshoots/ what we saw on screen leave me confused on what went wrong. Yes needledrops a mess but some of the writing in this really wasnt there or you could feel some things were cut

Is it ? I dont think you have to know a comic to like a script. The problem is that he deliberately decided to avoid the comic for most of it, because he wanted a fresh perspective and take on it, which is fine. But it was just bad direction.

Even a good script with bad direction script can turn out flat, but I suspect the script had its own problems to begin with

I mean you cant say its an issue he avoided the comic is bad direction but also say you dont need to know the comic to like the script. When what you are getting at is my point. If you know something is adapted from a comic. If that is being used as a selling point for the movie. Even if one likes the script the comic would be used as a reference as some point too.

Doubt the script ever leaks but what was so good about the script that we saw play out to them? Thats a genuine question. Because I havent read the comic but I saw the movie and weve seen many plot beats like that of a reluctant hero protecting a child before. The movie felt like a first draft

Doomsday we again there for Aura and to see action figures fight. We aren't there for truly emotional moments because they have made some odd decisions.

I like Reeves and Clayface most of human stories encapsulated that can stand as their own more than a universe. Universes are the live service of movies industry of "how can we sell them something else so it becomes their obsession. " where essentially someone says " I need to watch supergirl, peacemaker, suicide squad to get the full story to prepare for Man of tomorrow" but that isnt even true .

So far these movies more stand on their own as stories but doesnt have the same level of soul for me personally. Milly has an alright performance but its not like I feel like she is given enough to work with to have the true performance or movie what it appears this comic deserves.

Also just early in run to do a story like this to me

They need to go back to making character pieces with no overarching plot. And a knock out performance from the main star.

They cinematic universe s*** is over.

    Streaming & oversaturation destroyed it.

Also just general apathy from the audience.

DC was onto something with "Joker". And then in typical fashion, ruined it.

    Clayface may work. Idk.

I don't see the value is doing a MCU-at-nite storyline in the DCU.

DCEU for all its flaws wasnt tryna be "MCU buuut DC". It had its own unique heartbeat. There doesnt need to be 5-6 solo movies just to get to a team up movie.

Made sense with MCU in its infancy. It was risky back then. Not so much now.

The idea of seeing the heroes together is just different . In MCU it was a process that was multiple years of seeing their solos building a base. Getting to know the characters . it was more novel in that sense besides cartoons that combined universes like 90s cartoons of both dc and marvel as well as obviously comics.

the focus has been comics vs the 90s series of xmen, batman, spider man that people fell in love with that balanced solo stories and cameos without the character damn near winking at the camera like " throw me some money" which is kind of how Lobo cameo came across. Didn't feel natural at all and he popped in and out of the story with no purpose in the story himself but plot convenience.

I dont think they need 5-6 solos but they do need more world building then what we have gotten. Supergirl being in space cant really build the central world rules we will see for most of these movies. We are going to see a lot of heroes in man of tomorrow we just need to see a really good story. Even better than Superman 1 which was alright to me

    Not really what I meant

Im saying that you can like a script without reading the source material. And its fine to want to have your own unique take on the source material but the problem is that his take on the source material didnt produce good results

Yeah im actually very curious on the script, especially with the way gunn was raving about it. Could be worrying for WW and titans

I agree with what you are saying. But Gunn had creative differences and allegedly made changes of a studio cut vs a craig cut. When it gets to that point something isnt aligned. If he is following the script yet there are different cuts it becomes something about the soul of whatever they want to make is missing

Gunn and the studio only got involved when Craig original cut was testing really bad. Even Craig was like "this isn't working" which is why the studio step in.

This all happened after filming, meaning there's only so much you can do in post. I would imagine he took some creative liberties when directing and diverge from the script in some ways

  • This indie film is about to hit 100 Milli worldwide. That's a massive W

My thing is testing is important of course but if you are studio head and say you are only moving forward with the best scripts. You have so many eyes on the production. How do you not catch this with internal testing. This applies to much art to me be it games , music, movies. You can have people sign NDAs and give feedback on script , scenes and all of that before you make it to the testing point and having to do reshoots. Who would be able to openly give you a clear idea of whats working and whats not. Especially when there is this much off. Even if everything was more colorful as the comic the issue is so many various things

The script could very well had been fire and the directing made it flat tho

I mean I think they just wanted to give him agency to a degree and not overlook and interject for every scene he filmed lol. Probably bad in retrospect, but I dont imagine micromanaging the director is the best solution either

I am saying based on the words we saw on screen there was no way to make this a great movie in my opinion for me and I am not joking or hating

I mean agree but thats what I mean the original script could have been very different from what we got and that could include dialouge. We really wont know unless we see it, but like I said before I have a feeling the original script had its flaws lol

just saw it a couple hours ago

it honestly was not as bad as ive been seeing online but it is kinda disappointing after how great superman was and to the comic its based off of. some really weird choices were made like why was she not wearing her suit for like 80% of the movie .

the addition of lobo was strange but he ended up being one of the best parts of the movie to me, that was like insanely good casting on their part.

overall its like a 6/10 to me

when will studio heads realize that audiences of 2026 are no longer impressed with superhero films that have 2010s energy?

if this film dropped back in 2014 i guarantee it would have had great reception but that s*** don't work for today's audience.

audiences of the genre has matured and expect fresh storytelling.

  • Im late but I finally say this aggressively average but still didn't deserve all the pearl clutching online. This kinda reminded me of a time pre MCU where not every superhero film was a hit and thats ok.

I've grown to hate the "lets not put the hero in their iconic fit until the end" trend that going on in a lot these projects. Besides a couple of heroes its not really something I care about seeing like that.

This the type of movie they d use “she’s a bad mamajama” in the trailer for in the 2010s😂😂

I think everyone realized this but DC, which was my biggest fear in 2022-2023. They're the only one to even make this type of film now. Marvel and Sony stopped and are mostly on to select major properties that already have audiences

A 2014 version woulda probably had Superman end with Kal El tracking Kara's incoming ship, and then the Supergirl being based around her first days/months/year on Earth and where she fits as a hero. This woulda actually gave audiences a reason to care, which they were given absolutely nothing here

@NobodyWins @maxxing I just saw it, I thought it was good. Once they started showing flashbacks of Supergirl’s past I really got interested in the story.

I thought it was solid. Nothing great, but still solid, if that makes sense. I would’ve liked it more if the soundtrack hit as much as Superman & they didn’t focus so much on the samurai girl I thought that was odd

    What did y’all think?

I mostly agree but she’s a big part of the comic. I think they just needed to write her parts better.
