Nobody appreciates surrealism anymore damn
surrealism is great right until they do a whole episode explaining all the surrealism
Nobody appreciates surrealism anymore damn
it’s appreciated when it feels authentic and well-executed.
this s*** is trying so hard to be surreal that it just falls flat on its face.

Wasn’t really surreal outside of brief moments between Dre’s interactions with Nijah which I felt were deserving moments bc of her obvious delusion. I guess you might’ve enjoyed it more had we seen Dre bite Nijah or her actually be apprehended during the concert?
what exactly was surreal about this show?
cause I'm always down for surrealism, it's one of my favorite genres. part of the reason I loved S3 of Atlanta so much
my issues with this show have nothing to do with surrealism, I probably would've liked it more if it was more surreal
Idk if I liked this
what's the thread consensus
sadly, it's a miss for me
great cinematography and performance from Fishback and some of the special guests, but the storytelling was just too disjointed imo
by the third episode I thought the killing got repetitive. there was nothing at stake, Dre was gonna kill some innocent person and get away with it, and there was no conflict or real growth for the character
I liked episode 4 and thought we were about to see some growth or reflection from Dre cause of the therapy sessions but that quickly and predictably ended
then episode 6 went completely off the rails. did y'all like that? cause I had the same issue with it as I had with the Atlanta Goofy Movie episode that a lot of people loved. never wanna see a fake reality show forced into a season again. just a cheap storytelling trick to force exposition and character background into a show that lacked it. it wasn't the least bit funny, interesting or unique imo
finale was a let down too and too many unrealistic scenes
just a show that lacked stakes, growth, and tension. excessive violence and some surprise guest stars couldn't make up for it. Atlanta is one of my favorite shows but this is nowhere near it imo
tldr: 👎
Pretty much how I felt. I don’t know what episode it was that I started thinking like, ain’t no police on her ass or what? She not even being smart trying to cover s*** up, I think that is what really lowered the score and enjoyment of the show for me. There was never a risk of her being caught. No real tension from that angle.
I wouldve never known that was Billie had I not paused the show
Same. I thought she did really well. She has great screen presence.

I enjoyed the show, but I felt the same way about the early killings tbh.

I agree with some of these points, especially about the repetitiveness and the stakes. And the disjointed feel was due to the time jumps each episode which I didn’t like at all. In general I like films/shows that’s compacted into a small time frame.
But the show is coo to me, I don’t hate it, I don’t love it but I did fairly enjoy it.
But I did really like episode 6 (as well as the goofy episode, that s*** was goat IMO) I’m not an exposition guy to begin with, but I do appreciate when filmmakers use creative tactics to feed us exposition rather than in a dull way.
this was like a 8-9/10 for me. some great s*** and fishback’s peformance should get her an emmy
lol peep his ig story
Idk why I was really expecting a keri Hilson one. We got chet hanks again though 💀
dre killed marissa theory https://twitter.com/britttbanks/status/1637877998916345866?s=20
I thought this because her dad said she killed their daughter but then in the detective episode they said suicide then murder was motive so it seemed like it was meant to not have an answer

it’s confusing to me because if she didn’t kill herself why did they make it a point to have a multi second frame of the self harm cut on her wrist

Her death was ruled a suicide, the detective was just trying to figure out the motive of the boyfriend's murder. If it wasn't a suicide, Dre would've been caught immediately and the show would be over on episode 1. Also she is based of a real girl under the same name, Marissa Jackson who killed herself and it was rumored to be because of Beyonce's lemonade album

the real story of Marissa Jackson is actually just an urban legend. :khaled2:
On the topic of the theory though… I know I’m gonna end up ranting a lot here lmao bear with me
I think it’s somewhat likely she killed Marissa. Marissa is clearly reaching a point where she’s not really getting along too well with Dre. She’s got a boyfriend, got opportunities and new friends, and is intentionally leaving Dre out of plans to go out and what not. Marissa has also grown out of the Stan life that Dre is still fully into.
As the series goes on we find out Dre has major abandonment issues. Marissa abandons Dre, rejects her offer to see Nijah, and is choosing Khalid over Dre. Dre tells Marissa he’s a cheater and expects this to make Marissa stay. Marissa leaves anyways.
Then, Dre takes off and goes to the club, seemingly drinking (forgets the last night) despite it being mentioned throughout that she doesn’t drink. Hooks up with a guy who we never see again despite her being a virgin and never really showing an interest in men without it benefitting her chance to see Nijah. And then she gets dozens of texts from Marissa who now suddenly needs Dre more than ever, because Dre was right about Khalid, and Marissa is talking about how important Nijah is to her - despite the previous scene suggesting Marissa was out of her Nijah Stan phase. Then her phone is coincidentally found in the otherwise completely emptied house - and throughout the series Marissa still texts Dre.
Lastly the parallels to Rashida, with basically the same argument leading to her murder immediately followed by Dre diving fully into Nijah Stan mode the same night.
TLDR: Dre is an unreliable narrator, and there are suggestions throughout that she did it.

Yeah I get the unreliable narrator stuff but that's the point of the documentary episode. It gives us a third person perspective on Dre's crimes and we learn certain things weren't real like her getting shot at by her dad when he was already dead by that time and her rushing on Nijah's stage to actually get arrested opposed to the ending of the show. But they specifically state Marrisa's death was ruled a suicide in that episode. If it wasn't, they would've left some clue like her death being a mystery or something. That aside from the fact it would be impossible for her to get away with killing her, Dre escapes getting caught cause she kills seemingly random people. Also it's pretty foreshadowed with her having the same name is an urban myth of a crazed fan's suicide. Also her having scars on her wrist from self harming which was emphasized when Dre was kissing them. This means Dre was her emotional support in the past when she was dealing with her problems. We saw in the final texts that Marrisa sent to Dre, she needed her support. Dre not being there when Marrisa needed her likely made her blame herself for her passing so she embodied marissa in Nijah in hopes of keeping her alive in some way. That's what I think
