So after having made a few Takashi Miike threads in the past, i thought it was about time i gave this legendary filmmaker his own thread. A place to discuss any of his 103 feature films or anything else Miike related!
Bio
Takashi Miike (三池 崇史, Miike Takashi, born August 24, 1960) is a Japanese filmmaker. He has directed over one hundred theatrical, video and television productions since his debut in 1991. His films run through a variety of different genres, and range from violent and bizarre to dramatic and family-friendly.
Miike achieved notoriety for depicting shocking scenes of extreme violence and sexual perversions. Many of his films contain graphic and lurid bloodshed, often portrayed in an over-the-top, cartoonish manner. Much of his work depicts the activities of criminals (especially yakuza) or concern themselves with gaijin, non-Japanese or foreigners living in Japan. He is known for his dark sense of humor and for pushing the boundaries of censorship as far as they will go.
Some of my personal favorites by the man
Also, if his larger than life filmography intimidates you, always feel free to @ me to ask for recommendations for a Miike film. But just know that i'm not even CLOSE to finishing all his films
Dead or Alive and Audition are excellent
Dead or Alive and Audition are excellent
To be honest most people would say Audition is his masterpiece, but i didn't love it even though i'm a big fan of his work & style.. it's a good film but i didn't really care for the characters personally and the film is not nearly as fun to watch as a lot of his other films imo. It's also the one film of his were the gore is something i could have done without

I dont think it is either. I have dead or alive and ichi the killer above it
Dead Or Alive is so much f***ing fun
Might be one of the best endings to a crime film ever
First Love was solid mad confusing tho need more Miike movies like that
You really think so? I've heard other people say the same thing about the first act but to me it wasn't actually
What would you say was confusing
I feel like some of his cult classics like Ichi The Killer were more confusing the first time i watched them
I consider First Love to be the most acessible Miike film i have ever seen actually

haven’t seen any other miike, what would you be consider to be as accessible and “fun” to watch as first love?
& the entire smuggling plot had me confused, gonna watch again soon

Most def the first Dead Or Alive film, which is a true yakuza crime film that blends all of the stuff that Miike is known for but doesn't take any of those things to the extremes (except for 1 part which i won't spoil because it's so much fun to get caught off guard by it)
If you want to try a more cartoony gore-y side of Miike, which is something that draws a lot of people to his work initially, there's a couple of ways you can go
The bloody but still somewhat ''safe'' action films
The messed up ones with very graphic scenes
The just plain weird ones
And then you have the odd one that feels like it's a film where David Lynch secretly worked on together with Miike called Gozu, which is very slow paced and full of surrealism
Sorry for the long post lmao, these are pretty much some of his most popular works. But yeah, to get back to your initial question: Dead Or Alive is really acessible while still maintaining enough Miike moments
Enjoy, i love the ride of going through his filmography

Came itt to say I need to rewatch 13 assassins. I loved it the first time I saw it.
Only one I’ve seen is First Love, but it was like in my top 5 of 2019 so
Great film to start with, but the thing with Miike is he has an endless amount of dope films

Just rewatched Fudoh
SO much FUN
Ugly ass poster though, lowkey wanted to give it a lower rating because it just looks so ugly on Letterboxd in between the other film posters but i just couldn't.. i LOVE everything about this film. It's so Miike
And yes that is the one where a girl shoots poisonous darts from her vagina, that's pretty much what the film is known for
But so many other moments that are totally bonkers, funny, cool or all of those things at the same time
just watched Audition
this is my first Miike film, gotta decide what to watch to next
any suggestions? the easiest (because it's on streaming) is First Love but if anybody has a different one i'm open to it @op
