You think white women are disproportionately recognized on this list compared to the actual quality of white women albums this year? I liked a good bit of white women music this year but that’s me

Do you feel like the Boygenius, Mitski, and Paramore albums are all really top 10 worthy? I guess that’s what caught my eye and I find boygenius and mitski exceptionally bland. You would think that they’re Carole King or Joni Mitchell but they essentially make wallpaper music.
I honestly believe a huge amount of the praise Phoebe Bridgers and co receive is because they were successfully able to align themselves with progressive ideals and essentially co opt them for their own gain (as many white women do). Their relevance has much more to do with “identity” than music from my perspective.
Then another top 10 spot is Olivia Rodriguo who I know isn’t technically white but is pretty much marketed as a white passing girl, maybe I shouldn’t bother including this part cause it’s a touchy subject but yeah
That’s a decent chunk of the top 10. I don’t really think white or white passing women made 40% of the top 10 albums this year tbh. It’s just that they hold the perfect middle ground between progressive and safe for a publication like this

Haha for sure I see where you coming from. I liked the boy genius album haven’t heard the Mitski but yea I was pretty underwhelmed by paramore and Olivia this year and I’m fans of both
