After hearing the 2 singles this is sounding like a break-up album. No deep, overlaying cultural, social commentary. Just the guys jam band, live recording the tunes. Which feels oddly refreshing and familiar at the same time.
Happiness would be a top five 1975 track for me if Antonoff didn’t have his grubby mitts on it

yeah i hate to complain about mixing, but there’s no life in the production
I love that Part of the Band and Happiness couldn’t be any more different from each other but they’re both amazing songs in their own right
The versatility and range this band has is insane
Feel like I've heard this song at least 10 times from them before
Not really a fan of this ttrajectory tbh
I'm gonna be real with you man, the lyrics in Part of the Band are some of the worst I've ever heard in any song ever
I wish I enjoyed it though, it brings me no joy to dislike it
I think the lyrics in Part of the Band are amazing because only Matty could have written that song. The biggest strength you can have as a songwriter is your unique identity as a writer. The last verse of the song is especially great:
“Am I ironically woke? The butt of my joke?
Or am I just some post-coke, average, skinny bloke?
Calling his ego imagination
I’ve not picked up that in a thousand four hundred days and nine hours and sixteen minutes, babe
It’s kinda my daily iteration”
A beautiful way of referencing the “woke” label that’s been attached to his name in recent years while tying it into the theme of imagination present throughout the song, and then ending it with the running count of how long he’s been sober, adding that he reminds himself every day how long he’s been clean to keep him grounded

I agree, still added to the playlist because I like the overall production/melody but he's just rambling lmao
apparently dj sabrina was involved with production on the latest one. i can hear it. weird to see an artist that i'm pretty sure came up on rateyourmusic collabing with a mainstream artist

Part of the band is song of the year. I usually avoid their singles so i can come into the albums as fresh as possible but its been on repeat. Lyricially one of their best songs ever.
Ive been thinking lately 1975 are probably my favorite artist of the 2010s...their last 3 records mean so much to me and got me through a lot of s***. Love this band they will go down in history when all is said and done
Finally seeing these guys live for the first time
Hell yeah, they’re great live. Copped tickets for NYC and Boston today myself
