There isn’t a single instance in human history where people actually love their autocrat unless it’s a close tribal unit or said autocrat is backed by religion or something. In every country, socialist or capitalist, the people generally hate their government because people in general dislike being told what to do. If there were no term limits Nixon and regan would’ve just died in office or something, and maybe made it so you couldn’t s*** on them like you could before they had a chance to rewrite the laws

Autocrats? why have you jumped to the conclusion that a head of state who stays in their position beyond the arbitrary 8 or 10 year period is an autocrat, Especially when their extended time in office is through the people's vote? Nixon stepped down from his post, and Reagan was probably demented by the time his second term came around

Trump would be in the same condition as Reagan in no time, if he would win a second term. He's halfway demented now. It's kind of the running joke, actually. Trump and Reagan both have dementia, both had the same campaign slogans, both pardoned war criminals, both utilized Roger Stone, etc.

Kind of the hallmark of this entire presidency; history is repeating itself and most of us are too f***ing stupid, spiteful, or easily distracted to notice or care

By “autocrat” I don’t necessarily mean dictator, I mean a single man in power. Even then, there isn’t a reason for one person to stay on top for more than like 10 years, the power does get to their head almost universally, and it’s not like they’re the only person with the ideas they have. My belief that power shouldn’t be held for more than a set amount of years applies to prime ministers in Western Europe too cause they often take too long to get out of office. Also Nixon stepped down because he was about to get removed, I was talking like if there was no watergate/he was able to dodge it. And Reagan actually wanted to have the amendment that prohibits third term get repealed, regardless of his mental state

Both of them, and Nixon are more a less on the same breed of "silent majority" republicans. they know how to utilise racists to their benefit.

Obviously there'd have to be electorial reform to go along with the end of term limits, Partisaniship more or less acts as a funnel into who gets into office, so people with similar ideas can be heard. If a leader holds a post long than the 8 years we have now, it would be because the people want them there not because they decided "fuck the electorial process"
The examples of Nixon and show exactly why we won't suddenly get leaders who suddenly become "king for life." It's not like term limits are the reason watergate happened. Satan's health also shows why even with no term limits most people simply wouldn't be able to hold office for more than 3 terms anyway, FDR won 4 elections and no one can hardly call his presidency a disaster under the circumstances.
Lastly people aren't idiots, they could simply not vote to keep someone they don't want in office, Woodrow Wilson tried run for a third term twice and failed.

If Obama ran for a third term he’d win, maybe even a fourth term if these republicans are who he’s up against. But the point is Obama isn’t the only liberal that should be able to go against them. Fdr won his third term because he was doing well enough and he won his fourth term because of ww2, but each time there was probably another democrat out there that didn’t have the chance to be a president because the party went through with the safe choice of having the incumbent already there, and I think fdr was like the best president. Iirc Woodrow didn’t really run for a third term because of failing health so not really. My point is that nobody should hold power for that long

And if the people decide that no one should hold power that long so be it. Major powerhouses do fine with no term limits with most Western European states not practicing set terms, and gloabl economic powerhouses like Canada, China and Japan not praticing set term limits either. The problem is more America's political infrastructure than there being any real problem with someone running for 3 terms.
Although it's not that drastic a change the idea of Obama running for a third maybe fourth term doesn't sound so bad. It forces democrats who would run against Obama to actually invest their time in trying to better a winning formula as well

It’s not that one man in power is inefficient, it’s that one man in power is wrong. I don’t believe that in a true democracy, the same person would stay in charge forever, but when a person is given no term limits they can effectively bend the government in a way where the people feel they barely have a choice. If Obama ran a third or fourth term he would have had almost no democratic opposition lol

Personally I don't think Liberal democracy is very democratic either, but that's another matter altogether.
Point is if a democrat were to run against Obama they'd have to have a crazy good campaign, they couldn't simply run on "Trump bad," or vote for me because I'm a woman.

It literally wouldn’t matter how good they’re campaign would be unless Obama was deeply unpopular, which he wasn’t. There’s only been like 5 times a party didn’t pick their incumbent to represent them in an upcoming election and it was usually because of how terrible they were at inspiring people to vote, and aside from that Harry Truman and Lyndon b Johnson dropped out before the convention

If a progressive like bernie sanders had ran against Obama in 2015 he would have lost worse than any other time and lost a lot of future goodwill, if a moderate like John Delaney ran he would have lost worse than any other time and lost a lot of future goodwill. If there were no term limits there would be less George h w bushs and jimmy carters and more and longer Reagans, clintons, and Obama’s. Not that it would make much of a difference in material conditions but the term limits help the moral psyche of the country that anybody can be president (whether true or not) by allowing more people the chance to be president

Eliminate the two party system and give people actual choices vs the illusion of choice

electoral reform will never happen in america and it's the only way to take the focus off the two party system. like nobody who currently has a shred of political power would be benefit from implementing ranked voting
