Ol' Goodfellow Stories, Rihanna, "Coast 2 Coast"- 9/10
Probably the most impressive formatting I've seen in this game thus far. In terms of mainstream hype no one has quite the same effect that Rihanna has- so there were a lot of things you could have done with this album. Yet you come through with QUINCY JONES- a rightful legend in the industry- as the executive producer. I was initially skeptical of this pairing in some respects- like would it be entirely derivative of the 70s soul era or would it be some new s***, but the reference tracks really brought this one home. Listening to them in order really felt like traversing into a whole ass landscape, and I feel like that would have been what Rihanna was looking to do with this project. My one point off is the features go a little overboard- it would be awesome to have Ri with so many A-listers but at a point it's overproducing like on the Coast 2 Coast remix (some of my favorite producers ever but idk if we really needed them all on that one). A fantastic and satisfying continuation of Rihanna's saga.
Progressive Music Group (PMG), Young Thug, "Asylum", 8/10
SHEESH. Good buildup with the GQ interview, true to Thug's usual vague style in interviews, and the cover is hard as BRICKS. Then I got into the tracklist. Consistency in song length was definitely to your advantage- keeping everything 3/4 minutes benefits Thug a lot. Production choices were straight on point. TM88 x Thug is a collab that always brings a twisted smile to my face (which is important to this albums concept) and 30 Roc/16yrold/Monsta Beats provides a useful contrast to really distort the imagery here. The lone Purps song was a solid addition. Song titles had me feeling banger after banger- Yours Truly was a great closer. Only issue here was I felt a lot was missing with the features. Uzi and Gunna are great Thug collaborators yet where was Future, the rest of the (former in this game) YSL crew, even something nutty like Elton John would have set this off so well. This project definitely reached the sky, but failed to really break the limit- which is a fine thing when Thug is doing the work. Wavy s*** right here.
