    Problem? Take these pills!

What’s wrong with pills? Especially ones you don’t even know about and are just writing off reflexively

I believe the human being is more than capable of adjusting to a sudden change in diet in a short period of time. I went from eating junk to incorporating nutritional whole foods from 16-17 years old within a couple weeks-months. Anecdotal, of course, but I also think about how prehistoric hunter gatherers relied on eating whatever they could find, something new and completely different day by day. We haven’t evolved from a biological perspective much from then, so how can our bodies be any different?

How difficult would it be for the USDA to run some type of campaign for proper portion sizes and maybe adjust the food pyramid a bit?

it’s not even the just portion sizes it’s the fact we don’t even need 3 meals a day lol (lunch shouldn’t be a meal you only need midday fuel for instant energy from fruits or nuts)

Majority of americans are eating snacks aswell but another big problem is just uncontrollable junk food desires

America is always so afraid to actually get to the root of the problem and instead sell more ways to make the problem go away fast.

I get it to an extent. The amount of changes that would need to happen on a country-wide level to get the obesity epidemic under control would be monumental but it's still something that should be done rather than trying to push medications on children.

Unfortunately it’s tough for me to go through the second link (the full guidelines) on my phone. But the first link gives a summary, which again emphasizes that intensive behavioral and lifestyle modifications are first line therapy, and that medications / surgeries are reserved to patients refractory to first line therapy.

I don’t think it’s at all predatory, as the group making the guidelines have no financial incentives to suggest medications, nor do the doctors who prescribe them.

If pure behavior modification always worked, we wouldn’t be seeing such a stark rise in obesity levels in adolescents as we are seeing now. The medications being recommended have robust research behind them, and obesity is by no means a benign disease. And the longer we wait to tackle it, the worse outcomes for patients

Thank you for posting this. Always nice to have your perspective

Good point. This is a big thing I’ve been diving into lately. Lunch is completely pointless

I’ve been skipping lunch every day with no issue. Like I don’t even feel hungry throughout the day. we’re adding a whole unnecessary meal to our diets for no reason. I wonder what impact it would have if we normalized 2 meals a day

I don’t think giving children pills is a good thing, but I do feel for children that are raised by parents that don’t know anything about health. It’s a dilemma.

I don’t see the dilemma in either of those ideas. Parents that don’t know anything about health are going to be the only ones buying this article. I would say anyone old enough to be a parent should have the common sense that all it takes is a little diet regulation and physical activity, but Americans are a… ‘different’ breed, to put it lightly.

Agreed. And not just children, but people in general. And not just for obesity, but most preventable diseases in general.

Exactly that’s why i wonder if the people who bring entire leftovers and meals to work for lunch skipped breakfast or not. Cause i can 100% forget about lunch or only eat a lil snack and keep it pushing. Our bodies already keep a surplus of energy from previous meals

Removing a meal would help but again it takes away money from the food industry and there would be uproar about it

It’s so bad that it would be deemed un-american to enact actual change for health reasons. It would get eaten up by the anti woke politics crowd

Not exactly a side effect, but the direct impact this will have on attitudes towards last-resort solutions like medication and surgery will be devastating. If you can’t manage something as controllable as your child’s weight despite all their youthful energy, there’s no telling what else you will be willing to rely on it medication for, not to mention how the child will internalize this decision making. And pure conjecture, but I get the feeling most parents resorting to this wouldn’t have even taken appropriate measures to control their weight to begin with.
