This franchise already has a funny tone. Dano and Farrell were clearly hamming it up.

Saw this a second time and my feelings towards Dano's riddler have shifted a little.

I think a lot of movies in this genre try to glorify villains, but this movie does something different - the riddler is introduced as a sinister and frightening figure, but the movie briliantly ends up presenting him as a completely pathetic killer (as batman so eloquently puts it). His sudden "goofiness" becomes a mirror to this subversion.
