god is capitol so dumb altho tbf there was hype growing to emphasize on brian for marketing wise as the growing genius, already on today’s album cover:

and it’s nice that this scenario is reality as this makes it brians first official solo release

which is funny because if this makes pet sounds brian first solo work - it starts a curious pattern:

    pet sounds - 1966
    11 years later
    love you - 1977
    11 years later
    brian wilson - 1988

(for those who aren’t familiar ā€œlove youā€ is the first beach boys album since pet sounds that is 100% written and produced by brian - it was originally worked as a solo album ā€œbrian loves youā€ and features his wife marilyn singing on it, and the 1988 being his first official solo album)

the 11 years window then broke but if you break it down to a 10 years window the brian did release a solo album in 1998 imagination and also the great that lucky old sun in 2008 and if we count these it greatly extends an amazing run of brians creativity peaking back, isn’t it that curious?

ive put @Womanpuncher69 on love you and i think it’s the only album he heard outside of pet sounds and he loved it

i tried my best to set the picture for him - it’s a dramatically different album, what makes it close to pet sounds is that it’s entirely written and produced by brian but he’s in bed overweight and having coke for dinner every day now (so you can imagine his angelic falsetto is no longer shining, he’s more tom waits now - however done on purpose, during this time he was tired of the young boy imagery and crooners and raw low singers voices were more of a big thing, falsetto wasn’t - so he took classes to change his voices actually and also wanted to file paper to legally change the name from beach boys to just ā€œthe beachā€) he also doesn’t want something as produced as pet sounds and has found a new love for the back then upcoming moog synth which was new and wasn’t popping yet which makes this album layer so unique as the moog takes over all the record, it’s also very naive and brian lyricism wise (see the title): that’s what love you is

so i think that’s very important to know before going into it because it’s so vastly different sounding than pet sounds yet it’s so brian, it’s also r.e.m’s guitarist favorite album and has grown a cult among the fanbase - it is in my top 3 beach boys albums

his solo album it’s different because it was made with his great collaborator andy paley who was bringing the best out of him but also during his lockdown days terrorized by his abusing ā€œdoctorā€ eugene landy who was trying to make business and get into music (and his gf too by giving her writing credits! šŸ’° that’s the sad life of brian always being taken advantage of...) so some songs don’t hit but half of the record altho maybe a lil 80s dated on the prod has some great beautiful pure brian songs it is also a massive influence on the soundtrack of the game earthbound if you ever played that

I was just gonna ask if it was one of the earthbound records they named along with smiley smile u told me about cus I thought it was ! Love You sounds incredibly interesting i haven’t even touched it yet so I am definitely gonna listen maybe tomorrow morning. N the self titled but yeah it’s horrible and it makes me really sad thinking about it. He has been inhibited creatively and mentally for basically his entire career. Really amazing how resilient and full of life he is

fun fact this song on love you is the ONLY song in the entire bbs lord that has ALL THREE wilson brothers (brian, carl and dennis) singing each lead vocals line:

it’s one of my fav bbs song oat like top ten not because the melodies and the whole moog aesthetic and prod but due to that factor too

you can’t even really tell since brians rapsy voice at this stage became similar to dennis even more rapsy voice but yeah

dennis opens the song with the first two lines then brian takes over the next lines on the pre chorus and then back to dennis on the ā€œyou pretty darlingā€ then this is repeated and then at 1:19 enters carl
i love this so much bc like pet sounds even they’re drastic different sounds you can’t name any other album in the world that sounds like this, these arrangements and that production ... even more so not only like after it was made but before it was made there’s absolute no blueprint laid for a sound like this (which also can be said for pet sounds, much more even) brian was back in his bag even tho if he was in a different place in his life - this is why love you is the new pet sounds in my book

but yeah it’s a special album for these reasons and also because it’s the last real beach boys album with the original gang after that they just did mashed up compromise deals (not that they’re vain of any good songs there’s some love you left overs used in fact which are stellar) and fights going on then dennis becoming more alcoholic and then his tragedy.. so yeah

Really don't think this applies to rvi whom puts Don't Worry Baby at the tippy top and has gone deeper into late calaglogues than almost anyone

I'm not insulting or anything, I think it's a good song. I don't think its that ridiculous to say that its not literally the best music I ever heard in my opinion, that's all I said. I'm allowed to have my own opinion and have Pet Sounds are my favorite album, doesn't mean i'm a stone replica for not holding up everything else by the same artist on the same level. I really don't think its fair for you to act like I'm closed minded for having my favorites be Pet Sounds and Blue Album, there is nothing wrong with me having my opinion of my favorites even though my favorites also happen to be the most popular. When I agree with the most popular choice it seems that I'm carved into stone and won't flinch, but when I disagree with the popular choice then I'm a RYM hipster according to you.

Pet Sounds is the #1 album I've heard and is on another planet than everything except like 10 albums for me. For me I'd even say it's on a different planet to almost everything Beach Boys, that's how good I think it is even though I think you are tired of that boring opinion. You think it's depressing that I like it that much? Just because it's my favorite doesn't mean I'm looking for everything else to be an absolute replica with a closed mind. You know you're one of my favorite users but you need to stop getting offended over people's opinions about the artists you rabidly stan. It's perfectly fine that everyone doesn't share the same opinion as you on late career Brian Wilson gems or Rivers Cuomo home demo covers or whatever. Music discussion wouldn't be fun if we all shared the same exact opinion and I think it's always more interesting when we disagree about the stuff we love to varying extents. I don't want to deny my own opinions of having a particular favorite I like above the rest just for the sake of agreeing with your opinion on every single song they ever did.

you: "I like it as much as Pet Sounds"
me: "I liked it but i still liked Pet Sounds a lot more"
you: "this is depressing and feels useless to contribute"

It just doesn't really make sense to me why you'd want to give up all the good discussion because I unfortunately haven't been liking 80s-90s Brian Wilson as much as Pet Sounds. I've been going into all of it with an open mind and I've liked some of the stuff you shared with me and later Beach Boys that you advocated for more than I was expecting to, so keep that in mind as well.
