    SO HELP ME DOG

Wow, hadn't heard that one, what year is that from?

Brian's lyricism is mad underrated, when he wants to he can make a super compelling song

Also hard agree Imagination is underrated

think it’s sweet insanity era it was a demo he did so has to be around 1988... the studio version with harmonies on chorus is great too, the chords are so brian like if he had done this in the sixties it would be up there it’s a very sophisticated composition

imagine if your imagination would’ve been a beach boys single, what a comeback that would’ve been after the sip flop... breaks my heart that carl turned down those sessions they did, soul searchin’ and you’re still a mystery are outstanding songs that would’ve knock every ones doubts!!! and the project with the high llamas that were never be.. you heard of that too? bums me out man

but yeh imagination still a classic, i got a friend who turned into a bb fan and he’s a HUGE fan of that album, says it captures a pure innocence..

the song about carl, beautiful, and my favorite, the song sherry she needs me that he thankfully finally finished:

again imagine if this would’ve been a bb album.. altho the same can be said and even more for that lucky old sun, another pet sounds pattern!

altho i like that’s why god made the radio, has some outstanding songs that i never thought they would have left fly on a bb record today knowing mike love and s***

    song worth being spammed tho

sunflower even gets sampled in the game earthbound

@pneumonia the song sampled is deirde another song written and sang by bruce johnston who did disney girls

i believe the guy who made the music for the game said he spent nights going for a ride to listen to brian’s album from 1988 and praising it, also said he was a big fan of smiley smile 🙌🙌

when sail on sailor plays in the departed scorsese a real one for that, that’s on @Bad_Finger_Boogie

i like ray charles cover of it too

but yeh i can see that, these two albums shifts more into the soft rock of the 70s and without much of brian’s touch but it’s nice too for a change like carl brings his best song since feel flows on surf’s up:

    the tomboy song yeah @Ground

my diane is the best one by far, it’s a left over from love you and has dennis on vocals (feels like a similar situation to in the back of my mind: song that sounds like pet sounds but is not on there and has dennis singing)

altho the story behind it is funny

i love this obscure song from that era too, don’t know if you go that deep in the lore

there’s this cool cover of that stevie song and did a my diane coda in the bridge through the synth, it’s pretty nice

You guys listen to Smile Sessions, Brian Wilson Smile, Smiley Smile, or a custom playlist? Searching for the ultimate Smile is part of the fun but also can be frustrating as a completist, I’ve made so many tracklists.

Smiley Smile has been my go to for a while because it’s the closest you can get to The Beach Boys finishing the material as an LP in 1967 and I love it. But part of me still wants something more representative of the original sessions, and Brian Wilson Smile is the most complete and probably ranks above Smile Sessions for me, although the magic of the 60s recordings is missed, Smile Sessions is just too messy for me with some of the odd choices

  • Jul 14, 2020

and speaking of match point @Fantasy avalanche did a mix of it, talk about some real stans! they sampled the boys many times on songs with toro y moi or freddie gibbs, but for them to do a remix of miu song that’s serious lol

im assuming that’s how they ended up doing a feat with rivers cuomo since he’s obsessed with the beach boys too

mann... this s*** got me so deep bro i ended up contacting insiders and s*** and documenting the smile sessions myself from scratch, what was intended to be just a review to explain in details how this defines a legitimate genius and that brian wilson is the only one that earns that title ever ended up in me writing an essay retracting the very birth of what came to be the smile sessions, like even before that, what inspired brian what he was listening to, to documenting every step through it to the very last moment where it was officially shelved

lot of interesting deep facts and stuff, but if i would post it like itt (if i find it again) i would take like maybe 5 full pages lol that’s like how long it is

but it’s all love and passion, in the end of the day tho i like to take it easy and stick with the official smile sessions regular track list

also here’s a crime id like to commit while we at it: i like cool cool water over the original love to say dada

the top notch cutting edge production with groundbreaking synths that makes those water droplet sounds 💩 like one 💧 that lands on ur forehead during a burning sweaty hot summer day and slowly comes down cooling you off, it’s a musical feeling unmatched to this day for me

fees good to see some love for smiley smile tho đŸ€—đŸ€—

You b******, those synths don’t go on Smile tho i feel you, I’ve been in more of a take it easy stage too, but I just don’t know about the Smile Sessions, I think I prefer Brian Wilson’s Smile or even the Smile on the Good Vibrations box set. Some of the mixes are weird and messy on Smile sessions like they did too much. Like the demo vocals pasted on a couple songs and other edits. I’d be interested in reading anything about Smile whether your essay or just posts about it. I’m really deep into it.

tru but they had just that perfect dressing for the song and its theme you know?

mmmm that’s interesting and you have a good point, guess they had to frankenstein it a bit, i think the reason i don’t go too much or as much back to brians solo take on it is well first of all, we’re decades past and we all know where he took his vocals at:

yes im assuming it has something to do with some of his severe abuse but ppl don’t know through the 70s the whole boys band falsetto thing was washed dated and aged poorly, it was hippie culture, beatles had bunch of hair and doing blues, the new singers taking over were low tone vocals such as the great tom waits, or randy newman -whom brian was absolutely obsessed over his album sail away, and randy gave it back good with a song i forgot which one but he did a song where he sings about the beach boys in it- so it affected brian who legally wanted to change the beach boys name to just the beach -in hindsight was he wrong? was he that crazy for that? mm some kanye flashback here lol-and did specific exercise to lower his voice and get rid of his falsetto

    sorry i digress

but either way even tho he does a good performance on it, how can it match brian peak falsetto in his prime you know? on top of that, and what irks me the most is jeff foskett he been a ghost singer for brian for decades, mimicking his prime falsetto notes or replacing carl’s vocals (as he really takes on that role on the comeback album, the chorus of shelter for example is all him) and he just sounds off to me, very autogenerated, no soul..

sure he’s professional and can easily fool anyone, it nothing will come near listenjng to the one and only carl himself: ppl don’t realize but he was only 19 when recording the smile sessions, that’s a 19yo on good vibrations

fun fact the falsetto during the verses aren’t carl on the original version, they are cut by brian himself, when the “iiiii hear the sound of a gentle word“ and later “wheeeen i look in her eyes” comes in, the iiii hear the sound and wheeen i look are both edited in and sung by brian, go relisten, once u notice it never goes away haha

but word, when i’ll get around that essay again (on different accounts/hard drives) ill let you know for sure, it has to be the most complete (im not saying to brag it was years in the making and lot of talk with insiders, documentating all sorts)

@2words theres this cool project of musicians from portland covering smiley smile, i thot it was nice to hear new talents and indie scene take on it for a change from doing pet sounds:

also fun fact, steven tyler singer of areosmith says of all the three albums he would take with him on an desert island would be smiley smile

Yeah of course the young Beach Boys are missed on the solo Smile but the completeness is what gives it a fighting chance for me. It’s truly a complete album and flows coherently in a way that Smile Sessions isn’t able to. I think ultimately Smiley Smile is the closest to getting the best of both worlds, yeah it’s stripped down but it’s basically all Smile songs completed by the 1967 beach boys and pressed to an LP. I got the original mono vinyl of it recently and it sounds great
