Looks like the season is officially going down as a divisive classic. I’ll be standing over here on the right side of history

  • Finale was
David was spitting that real s*** tbh
Terry getting blitzed at the after party
Weakest season so far but still very good. Next season going to be a banger for sure

Good observation about the Sydney x Carmy connection in the first episode cause it then directly ties into their dynamic in the finale with Sydney getting anxiety attacks

People saying nothing happened which is almost the point because the whole season is built on this full circle thing going on with David, Carmy, and Sydney

I only noticed because I binged all three seasons in less than a week, lol, but Sydney is also seen prepping a salad with fennel in one of the earlier episodes so she's definitely not allergic to it.

Her and Carmy's relationship and the parallels are super interesting. For better or for worst, he's gone through so much and tries to guide Sydney in the right direction, but so far she's had zero accountability.

One of the things Carmy said her previous employers said about her was that she was impatient. And this is proven throughout the show as there's a pattern where Sydney's over eagerness is met with pushback from Carmy as he knows better and yet she takes it the wrong way or doesn't listen (e.g. the mobile orders or her promising they'll get a Michelin star) and ends up facing no consequences for her mistakes.

Maybe it's their closeness in age, but there's clearly a subconscious unhealthy competition that feeds her insecurity (when she looks at reviews she focuses on every mention of Carmy) despite feeling like she's good enough to make a name for herself. And yet it's her turn to lead when Carmy is locked in, she freezes and Richie has to step in.

But maybe that's what draws Carmy to her as she's similar to Mikey in regard to the impulsive unaccountability. As much as it'd suck to see her leave The Bear, she needs to so she can face some actual consequences and learn/grow from it. There have been plenty of red flags that indicate the grass is not greener on the other side. But she's too eager to make a name for herself to notice.

totally off topic and long, but yeah, the writing is top-notch, lol

Weakest season I reckon that’s a given, however it has very high moments, my favorite being the entire episode where Sugar gives birth. I don’t remember marveling at both the loveliness and the pain of a tv show or movie like that in a long while, very heartfelt.

I’ve also liked the few moments where Carmy grapples with his past - all in all the fleeting flashbacks are so well done - which all comes culminating in the finale. It was about time he confronted that.

Finally got around to watching s3, its good but its definitely the weakest to me and it felt like a half a season. The finale makes me feel like the show went on a mid-season break.

Also I love the Faks but some of their screentime could've been swapped out to give Ebra and Gary some more scenes.

Faks needed 5 mins max runtime for the entire season. There are waaay more interesting characters to explore than those man-babies

Didn't really like season 3 at all, I enjoyed the two seasons so far

To me this reminds me of not liking Better Call Saul at all

Two shows that are loved and are acclaimed, I don't seem to like this

No resolution to Carmen’s relationship with Claire.

No resolution to Carmen’s relationship with Richie.

Didn’t find out if syd’s staying or going.

Barely even learned about the review.

What actually happened this season? If we’re going purely by plot, this season was not it

Only watched the first 3 episodes or so of S3 and I don't enjoy the direction I think this show is going in. Seems to be focused on realism and dark topics but also has completely unrealistic parts like Carmen being a wasteful perfectionist and his uncle isn't even coming down too hard on him for wasting his money Don't know who tf is eating these fancy ass fine dining dishes in Chicago and there was that S2 episode where Sydney visited a bunch of restaurants serving this kind of food in Chicago in one afternoon

Show feels like it's trying to be Chefhoria sometimes. Just trying to be cool with it's borderline autistic gifted protagonist. F*** all logic or attempts at realistic characters, it's aesthetic above all else

First episode of S3 was cool though. Great summary of Carmen's journey and insight into his character. Will watch the rest of the season but I really couldn't take the third episode with that goofy ass montage showing plates falling and the staff messing up the menu to indicate the restaurant's downfall

Yeah Carmy reacts that way to good news and bad.

Had to rewind that scene 3 times to make out the words highlighted in the review only to end up just as confused

Also, wtf have they done to richie's character? Why's he bff with the staff and owner of a restaurant he spent 5 days at as an apprentice? And why did the restaurant's owner, one of the most famous chefs in the world, go back to syd's bare ass apartment for an after party?

I'm nitpicking I know but I really feel they're trying to turn this into a sitcom that's totally at odds with the first two seasons and i'm not cool with it

Yup it's intentional, and a great way to mess with the audience. A puddle of anxiety that Carmy is, reacting the way he did, gives nothing away.

Think you're reading too much into it. I never got the vibe that they're turning it into a sitcom. Remember, they're all chefs in a celebratory space, and that British retired chef has the Carmy connection along with his British assistant or whatever, who's at the apartment. My guess is that they wanted her farewell at Syd's place so that they could juxtapose her anxiety of saying farewell to her own job situation with Carmy and picking that over a new spot where she has the kind of reign that the retired chef had.

i feel you. for me the result of all these things is the illusion that these are real people, which the first two seasons did such a good job of building up, falls apart and as a result i feel less invested in their stories. there's a juxtaposition (borrowing your word) between the serious real-life s*** - like Richie struggling to come to terms with the fact the woman he loves is marrying another guy - and the absurd - like that dumb, dumb scene of neil messing up serving that meal, or the British chef gesturing to Richie of all people while giving her speech on farewell night of her restaurant - that just wasn't present in the first two seasons, or if it was, then it wasn't as in your face as it is in this season, and i hate it.

i need to give this season another watch. perhaps my feelings toward it will change, but right now i'm really disappointed

It's a divisive season of television, even among critics. Me personally, Season 1 is a 4.5/5, then season 2 & 3 are both 4/5s. It does what it sets out to do but I understand the complaints
