So it’s commonplace for a young black man in Toronto to never hit up a black barbershop till he’s an adult?

I mean idk about that but I dont really place someones blackness on if they went to a black barber lmao

What I'm saying is that the code switching toronto lingo and overall behavior dont seem that crazy if you know niggas here lol

It’s actually gotten wayy better in American media. Trust me im the nerd that looks out for stuff like this

Where it’s bad is in the foreign stuff. Basically every black person in non american made media is biracial (UK cough cough)

Same in Brazil, it's horrible in Brazil. Colorism rampant in their media. Even black figures get casted white or lighter skinned. Horrible

It ain’t that crazy in America either. It’s not like Canada is on Mars. You think there’s no code switching here?

All I’m doing is explaining what Saint Aquinas means when he says “Gambino tier blacks”. And I’m sorry bro but a suburban biracial drama club nigga raised by his white mother and a suburban drama club nigga with only white friends are both gonna fit into that bracket

Not saying it makes em less black. Just a different experience

I agree with your overarching point to a degree but to say Tyrese is the only famous dark skinned actor (or actress?) is factually untrue

Morris Chesnut dark af and always the good guy & the hoes love him to death

I do agree to an extent with op tho

Think this narrative that black people "only" have slave n gang movies is such an old trend n played out argument tho.

YOU only pay attention to that maybe, there are plenty of black movies since late 2000s or at least early 2010s (even in the 90s we had a decent amount but not as much) that hit many spectrums n perspectives.

Get out of that old sterepotype of black cinema, that was also made up by white people.

That’s not what it means bro

Do Canadian niggas also rap w fake southern accents?

I think ops argument is outdated for the most part which i explain on in my newest post, but yeah he still has a point to a degree.

But yeah, black women especially dark black women have only gotten really prominent the last decade or half or so. Can be better (and should be better) but still decent/good imo. Also has to do with how we're getting a lot more black directors n writers in the industry.

I feel like if you point out certain "examples" tho to op that goes against him, he's just gonna say those are black leads in movies/tv not "for black people" lol.

Some of the most prolific actors in cinema are Harry Belafonte and Diahann Carrol both 'light skined'
    James Earl Jones
    Sidney Portier,
    Dorthy Dandridge
    Pryor & Mooney
    Paul Robeson

    Directors such as
    Oscar Michaux
    Van Peebles
    Ava Duvernay

As with anything, we're experiencing lulls and cycles. Imagine if we had the voice or platforms we do today with the classically trained actors and actresses from the 70s aka the Blaxplotation era.

The Black Cinema landscape hasn't reached its peak yet but it is being severely controlled. Most of this is our issue as we have this need for 'Big Brother' to pitch in. There's no way or reason why the Sound Track of Curtis Mayfield and talents of Ron O'Neal should be limited to Super Fly (great film but come on) That's why films such as The Spook That Sat By The Door are so special.

Remove the politics and focus on the arts.

I mostly agree with this post but I'd just like to add to it by saying that Drake doesn’t fake his personality his way of acting is literally just the average toronto black kid

Black Canadians are basically just african Americans that have to grow up around white people but that doesn’t make them necessarily white washed (although a lot are) it just makes them really f***ing good at code switching and navigating different spaces even more so than african American kids

Cus black people here still grow up with whatever immigrant black culture plus african American culture basically from childhood

Not to mention drakes dad is from Houston so when u hear drake talk to other black people or use aave any expert can tell it’s natural for him but also when he goes on like ellen and sounds white as hell that’s also pretty natural for him too. He’s not really faking

I’ll just say on the suburban tip, that isn’t a clear indicator of not growing up with the “black experience” as oppose to the hood n projects. Especially nowadays. It really depends on the specific place you’re talking about. There are a lot of suburbs that are more or less hood adjacent, and the people living there are with the s***s no question.

    Especially Chicago south suburbs tbh
