Idk, it's tricky. If we're talking about adding all writing credits as sales, then writers who write for various mainstream artists and are known for consistently getting huge hits probably knock a lot of artists down the list while barely singing a ad lib on the record
yeah but they deserve it more than the artist a lot of the time lol
We all love Aretha but are we acting like Carole King's writing isn't the most important part of why Natural Woman was a hit?
Or that Max Martin's genius isn't the main reason those Britney's songs are so iconic?
Samples are really tough cos some could literally just be a drum break but I think when it's a total cover then the original artist should get the credit to an extent. Like to me when Beyonce covers Maze, that's still a part of Frankie/Maze's sales, commercial, cultural and musical legacy.
There's a lot of behind the scenes writers who i think we could really call some of the greatest artists of our era. i don't think they need a spotify artist page to deserve that
MJ isn't one guy tho really.
The Beatles were 2 songwriters, towards the end 3 and a genius producer.
MJ was Rod Temperton, Quincy Jones, those 2 guys who wrote Human Nature and James Ingram.
That's 6 guys just for Thriller let alone his career. The Beatles did it with Paul, John, George and the other George
let alone the fact that he grew up under the tutelage of all the other Motown legends
Probably MJ.
But man the Beatles really made Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album, and Abbey Road. Like how tf
Idk man they might be even
I listen to the beatles more but MJ the goat for billie jean alonr
disclaimer: im black.
let alone the fact that he grew up under the tutelage of all the other Motown legends
yeah. he is a writing legend, but i don't think he developed into his own writer in the same way someone who came up under the same songwriting machine like Stevie did. Or Curtis Mayfield, which is probably more a hot take. those songs curtis did with the impressions are amazing too
I listen to the beatles more but MJ the goat for billie jean alonr
disclaimer: im black.
beatles goat for Happiness Is A Warm Gun alone
beatles goat for Happiness Is A Warm Gun alone
Everytime lennon hits that GAAAAHHHHHHHNNN falsetto i ascend
Yesterday is the most covered song oat so ironic if youre not talking about Beedles

and people do still reference them culturally. Like in Black Beatles, probably a bigger hit than any MJ-referencing hook i've heard in the last few years
I'm black, and I'd still say The Beatles.
In terms of impact on the culture, I'd say they're about even. John Lennon's death f***ed people up as much as MJ's did. What tips it in the Beatles' favor is the music quality. The Beatles just have more classic albums than MJ. To be honest, that's gonna have when you have 2, and later on 3 genius songwriters.
And if we were counting Solo Beatles, it'd be no contest, even if you added the Jackson 5 stuff for MJ.
MJ had niggas in remote villages in Africa chasing him. He is no doubt the GOAT. Beatles white people music anyway
