also why do you people care about what people who don’t give a f*** about a genre have to say about it lol, especially when it comes to rap music

How do you determine if a genre is in a “healthy” place?

Like for example, Morgan Wallen is the biggest country artist rn and even bigger than some pop artists but Country is a whole is barely on the radar of the average listener unless it’s someone like him that gets a huge hit song.

It’s not about caring, it’s just a***ysis of the state of a genre.

I could care less what the average person is listening to, hip-hop will always be my most loved genre and I will always seek out new music no matter what. But it is interesting to discuss

Do you think people view the 90s as the golden age of hip-hop because of underground artists?

I think it’s considered that because the gen X people that were teenagers/young are the elder statesmen now

It was also just in a much more vital point in its life cycle where it was easier for things to be groundbreaking so legends were being made left & right. It’s a legacy genre now so it relies a lot of being self referential & nostalgia (not a bad thing, just how genre tends to age)

  • Jun 10, 2023

Can't name the last time actively seeking out new hip-hop music. Not saying this as a bad thing either. Just one of those music genres where it's hard to even know where to begin to look. Now before this post gets hateful responses, aside from the OG's (who are on personal playlists) - what is even popular anymore? From the examples posted on this website (where it's 15 year olds remaking music like "you're a jerk" Nightcore edition) it's genuinely just like... where does someone even look lol?

The point is, elder statesmen or not, people don’t look at it as the golden age because of underground acts that barely anyone ever heard of. They praise it because who were the biggest acts in the genre at that time.

That’s what you have to remember when people bring up the state of a genre. It’s not saying there isn’t interesting stuff happening in the underground, it’s just not really relevant to the discussion

From a statistical point of view, it's essential to involve various factors in connection to the art of hip-hop, given its hierarchal nature of the genre. Concepts akin to effort, commercialization, prevalence, and output of immaculate records in the space of hip-hop could very well determine the current state it manifests in. It's not as straight forward to fundamentally measure the condition of hip-hop in current times, with the involvement of streaming services and greater draw towards specific niches.

    “People”
    “They”
    “The discussion”

    You’re talking about who?

You’re in a music community (ktt2) pushing this idea that the people that think dismissively & casually about the genre you apparently care about actually define that genre somehow . I just don’t get what for bro this just strikes me as such a sad lens to look through & it’s self afflicted that’s the weird part

It’s like you have an inability to look beyond your own personal worldview

  • By the way the thousands of threads of discussion on artists here are 99% irrelevant jus James in accounting didn’t hear of them 👍

Like I said, I could give two f***s what the state of hip-hop is as a whole because I’m always gonna listen to it.

But, as someone who’s very passionate about music, it’s interesting to discuss and look at things from a broad point of view. It seems like you think this discussion is to steer people away from listening to rap or something

It's okay to openly express your emotions regarding the opinions you've stated fruitfully to the respect of this discussion. it's crucial to carefully conduct an a***ysis of hip-hop in the modern landscape, considering both qualitative and quantitative viewpoints.

It’s interesting to talk about the state of the mainstream sure but what you’re suggesting is that it defines the entire genre which is just a verifiably insane take

Like most genres don’t have artists cracking the top 100 … idk this is going in circles

  • Jun 10, 2023
    so much pain

metro boomin is kinda carrying mainstream rap for now which is pretty crazy

heroes and villains and spider-verse are the only rap albums people have given af about this year

    https://twitter.com/hiphopalldayy/status/1667286571781898244

He can carry it but is it dope bruh. Is it actually quality. I haven’t heard the soundtrack but that heroes and villains was wack. But truthfully maybe he’s the only one trying to make art at least in the mainstream. Maybe not the only one but I’m not sure. I just know that s*** was wack.

Your syntax is amazing never change it

  • bh0stman

Thats a golden age, we had one in the 90s and one in the late 10s, hip hop has the benefit of being able to incorporate any other genre into itself so that will keep it alive as long as music is alive

you mean early 2010s right? Late 10s music is why we’re here now tbh

Appreciate the kindness you've reciprocated, it fuels my confidence to continuously give my input in forthcoming discussions regardless of the concepts implemented.

  • When y’all bring up the underground, who exactly are you referring to nowadays? Like who are some rap artists y’all rocking with right now?

  • F*** what the mainstream thinks. All that s*** is controlled by design. Hip hop is as healthy and as vibrant as it has ever been

  • You also have to have an unbelievably small frame of reference for music if you think “how the mainstreams doing” applies to 95% of genres lol
