Just watched this after putting it off for a while and seeing a lot of praise about it.
Great f***ing movie. Real heart string symphony with this one. Great direction and score. I don't have any complaints this is a top tier film
A lesson that family is not what you're born into its what you surround yourself with
Trailers did not convince me but the word of mouth did. Wow was I wrong about this movie
Definitely top 10 of 2023 and a new Christmas classic. S*** had me tearing up near the end.
Get Giamatti his first Oscar asap
Yeah the marketing team definitely botched it. This s*** didn't look anything remotely what this movie is in trailers. Kind of a travesty really since cinema this elite is so rare nowadays
Two things i noticed on rewatch
the film they were watching in the theatre clearly alludes to Angus's dad, that he goes to see in the following scene
and the snow globe also looks like a father looking at his baby, clearly reminding angus of his dad and is what makes him take it
Cinema!
That sounds like a vibe
It’s crazy because I literally recommended this movie to shawty at a party tonight
the cinematography was amazing and so was the sound design/soundtrack but i feel like i'm literally going insane with the critical reception to this film. this is an absolutely awful movie and its baffling how well this is being received and rated

What did you feel was awful about it?
I felt the story was simple but endearing, the acting was phenomenal, and it had a certain feel-good vibe to it that reminded me of movies like Sister Act.

for reference, Nebraska is actually one of my favorite movies ever. I didn't expect the same film or anything, but my reference for Payne movies is still that and Sideways. I think the cinematography and sound design in this movie were impeccable but behind that there's just nothing here really. Firstly besides D'avine Joy I didn't think the acting in this was that great. Sessa was clearly an amateur over-acting and signaling often, and Paul Giamatti was fine but he was just Paul Giamatti. Everything in it was very predictable and cliche and they tried to fit in way too much to where everything became a convenient plot device without much actual exploration or weight. There are some scenes which are good (like the father scene), but then it doesn't actually go anywhere, it just happens quickly and then next scene - same with the party scene. There's just so much going on and within almost 2.5 hours it's shocking how much happens but also how little. I get what he was going for by trying to make a number of cliches and then subvert them (i.e. misfit group of kids but then all of them leave except one, co-worker love story but then she's married, janitor reassuring the tragic cook but then she rejects him, etc.) but it's just not thorough and it contextually all felt very passe and hollow. It also doesn't help the story is painfully unaware of the setting it takes place in; tons of things feel highly anachronistic. Everything this movie does I could easily find better in tons of other coming of age or teacher-student bonding films and this doesn't add anything to the formula.
This was stellar.
Kinda a shame that it came out the same year as Oppenheimer because normally I'd be rooting for this to sweep.
CRAZY that Sessa wasn't nominated (and that it's his first movie WTF). Dude stole the show
