A large part of the backlash has been been driven by radicalised weirdos who feel threatened by an imaginary SJW agenda they think Naughty Dog is pushing. They've been ready to pile on this game for years and the leaks just let them do it earlier.
I haven't seen the leaks so I can't speak on the validity of any criticism aimed towards the game's writing. I'd still take that criticism with a mountain of salt considering so many nerds lack the framework to engage with media in any meaningful way.

At 10:55 someone said Ashley and at 18:12 someone yelled Charlotte. If they can ensure names don't repeat somehow, that would do a lot for immersion and I might actually feel slightly bad about killing these people
