I mean I really aint mad at them. It would have been really hard to make a second game without the motive of Joels death. Tbh when I saw trailers and s***, I thought the story would revolve around Ellie getting revenge for Dina. That doesnt make sense at all if we being real.

If you haven’t played the game and not heard any leaks at all, you’d have gone into this game expecting it to be a story about Ellie getting revenge alongside Joel because the devs made it abundantly clear through the marketing that Joel wouldn’t have just died to just kick off Ellie’s vengeance. However, if you’re here in this thread, then you already know that they decided to kill off Joel in the most undignified way possible.

They have the player control a new character who is introduced as the daughter of that surgeon from the first game. You know the one, the unnamed surgeon who was literally going to cut open a teenage girl's head to extract what was in her brain without her consent. Suddenly Joel killing that surgeon became the most relevant story beat to take away from the ending. Not that the Fireflies were going to kill Joel until Marlene stopped them, not that the chances are the cure wouldn’t have fixed humanity, nothing like that. It’s just that Joel killed a person who, unbeknownst to the player, had a daughter who’d come out of nowhere four years later and straight up kill Joel, even after he saved her.

That doesn’t scream a “respectful” way to send off Joel to me and a lot of other people who’ve played the game, even though that’s what the developers said they tried to do. Protagonist deaths happen all the time, e.g. Game of Thrones and the Red Dead Redemption series, but the difference between those and The Last of Us Part 2 is that they didn’t kill off their characters in the cheapest way possible. Ned Stark dies in service to his family’s story of revenge very similarly to Joel’s, with their deaths being very early on and as a byproduct of the mistakes they made. However, unlike Joel, George R.R Martin didn’t decide to insult the reader’s intelligence by bringing back the daughter of a man he killed in battle and have her kill him in revenge."
