You literally brought up MGS V

Play MGS3 on the collection and murder everyone and tell me it isn't more difficult often from alarms and how much chaos is caused . Of course you can but the game is inherently designed where that is not the purpose. Of course Chaos Theory, Hitman and MGSV feel clunky they aren't doing expensive animations nor are they trying to encourage you to kill as many people throughout the course of the game. Their focus is using violence when needed rather than solution for so much . They aren't trying to give the player the same feeling. Its different aims. They don't really need to be compared in that sense

As I said and was saying I hope last of us 3 improves stealth even more. 2 improved steatlh from 1 quite a bit. But no one in Hell am I going to compare it to the top stealth games of all time with a straight face

I brought up 5 as an example of a game where you could take the identical approach to TLOU2. Both are stealth action games. Or is MGS5 not a stealth action game?

TLOU2 is similarly way more difficult to play guns blazing. Throw that s*** on higher difficulty and go try play that s*** like that. You gonna have a harder time playing non-stealth than any Splinter Cell, Hitman, or MGS lol. Sound like you just played it on Normal and called it a day.

They don't feel clunky because of animation. MGS5 doesn't feel clunky, either.

You can have your own thoughts on where it ranks. You tryna make it out like this is some crazy hot take when reality is it's a pretty common belief these days that TLOU2 is absolutely in that conversation alongside MGS5 lol

I’ll agree that Abby’s friends aren’t given a lot of depth but they do get an arc that makes you understand the tension between them and I think their development does a lot to strengthen Abby as a character and I do feel while there are some obvious parallels between her and Ellie, those details also showcase her as her own distinct character and she gets a proper arc that differs from Ellie’s even by the end. I don’t think it’s like other revenge tales where you follow a main character hunting down the enemy only to realize they’re alike to spell out a cycle of revenge theme because you play as Abby and she has a totally different story with different struggles and relationships to navigate. So by the end, both characters feel real and while there’s similarities, there’s also a number of differences so it never felt too literal or tacky to me. The fight between them was so intense for me and hard to play because I had grown very attached to all the characters (also Ellie and Dina’s relationship is point blank one of the best depictions of lesbian love I’ve ever seen in an artistic medium because it doesn’t bring attention to their sexuality like so many other stories but rather just focuses on their chemistry and their care and attraction to one another)

Idk, I think the story rejects plot armor pretty outright that I didn’t mind Tommy surviving a bullet to the head. It’s not like people haven’t survived gunshots like that in real life.

The obvious parallels are too much for me and were eye roll inducing because so many other parts of the story are genuinely written. The direct parallels feel hamfisted. Ellie and Dina love is distinct I agree its great depiction. I just wish some of the earlier parts ellie was less douchey example the dead horse corpse she sees it and Dina feels sick like any normal human reaction pregnant or not and Ellie a douche like "whats wrong". There are certain points throughout the story where Ellie felt too edgy.

Nah Tommy had plot armor multiple times throughout the story it was just horrendous. Especially for Tommy to live and be the reason Ellie gets dragged back into everything and not come with her. It is what it is though I am glad it worked for others and I dont in anyway hate it

splinter cell games are known as some of the hardest games ever you can't be serious

I played one above normal for last of us 2 I am pretty sure. To say last of us 2 executes stealth better than the stealth games I listed . I am saying stealth not action but stealth is a crazy hot take

It's not a hot take man. Pretty commonly held opinion these days.

TLOU2 on Crushing is harder than any game we've posted in here. It's not even close.

Ellie was always edgy to a degree though and she’s not some perfect good person even at the beginning of the story. You clearly see how Joel’s lie has deeply hurt her and she’s a very closed off person now. She even wanted to go for Abby alone so her attitude towards Dina isn’t the most caring to begin with. I think though that is what makes her an excellent character though. She doesn’t begin the generic innocent to corrupted route like these revenge tales always go, she is a genuine human throughout.

I’d say Joel had WAYYY more plot armor in TLOU 1 than Tommy ever had. Bro massacred an entire army in a hospital and didn’t get hit once. Every hit Tommy takes or fight he takes is believable

no I am not talking action game. Yes I know higher difficulties I am talking specifically a stealth game

All the stealth games I have listed have ways the player can make it more difficult or higher difficulty which is where the stealth mechanics they have that last of us 2 doesnt shine. I respect your take though. Like at the end of the day thats all I can do

she was arguably quite innocent game 1 though . Plot armor when you are playing as the main character is different than a side character we dont see what happens to them often. Because every character we are playing as who we die many times and respawn but they cant die because they have to progress the story has plot armor lol.

Ellie was never a perfect person to be worshipped at all. Was willing to risk sacrificing herself for the cure for humanity and I feel its a good character story again my main gripe if anything is side characters dont get enough shine especially abby friends

stealth mechanics like mechanics. I think on grounded its much more stealthy but the amount of mechanics at play doesnt compare to a hitman , splinter cell or games from the ground up meant to be stealth games through and through

  • Sep 9, 2023

I even listed the mechanics. I am not saying on grounded difficulty this game doesn't force you to be more stealthy and crouch walk everywhere or prone

Grounded literally changes the entire Ai and adds mechanics like keeping an empty gun to shoot a blank to lure enemies and reload to get enemies out the way and upgrades the dog sniffing to be crazy so you can’t prone and crouch the entire time but ok

Just give up on it bro. The AI in TLOU2 alone propels it into the upper crust of stealth titles, where quality of AI is arguably more important than any other genre lol

yes that is some but Kroniic my brother in christ you cant think giving the player ability to fire an empty gun and dogs that have existed in stealth games forever compares to the stealth mechanics at display in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, recent hitman series, MGS3 with an entire camouflage system and so much more

Overall as a game yes Last of Us 2 infinitely better. Especially on harder difficulties. But the actual stealth sandbox that stealth focused games have in comparison to 2 isn't close their focus is on so many of the attentions to detail. They are for the ground up focused on stealth

Nigga I am not comparing the AI of last of us 2 to games from 20 years ago that isn't what I am going for . I am saying games focused on being stealth games have many more stealth options and mechanics at play naturally than a game that is stealth action and so much more . Thats it simply

If you cant grasp this then you simply never played the games I am referring to.

a game built from the ground up to be a stealth game is a better STEALTH GAME than a game that stealth isnt its main focus . Its not a hot take. Its not to in any way say the stealth in last of us 2 is bad. It has room for improvement which is what I have been saying. Even during my playthrough I told Kroniic that last of us 2 had more stealth mechanics than I was expecting but its still not on the level of games FOCUSED ON BEING STEALTH GAMES. That is simply reality. The same way stealth games can sometimes be played more akin to action games but that is not their best feeling refer to Splinter Cell Conviction, Hitman Absolution. Like when a game is asked to be two genres even slightly its rare its the absolute best mechanically at both genres. Last of Us 2 is still the closest I can think that recently nails two genres though

  • Sep 9, 2023

Like there is no way with a straight face you can act like the boss fights and use of stealth in boss fights compares to snake eater and that is okay. I am saying its different highs . But when you say a game clears another game in everything you are not being serious

I beat it like 10 months ago and said good things about it and still do. This discussion was solely about whether it’s the best stealth game ever. He said "this isn't a hot take". I tried to explain why it’s a hot take to me . But at the end different strokes different blokes. But I beat the game long ago . Trophies all that there

I simply said it’s not the greatest stealth game of all time for me .

I just in terms of trophies shows I am not bullshitting. When someone says the last of us 2 is the greatest stealth game of all time I do wonder how many stealth games they have played . I think Last of Us 3 will be able to lean into even more stealth mechanics, boss battles and more. Different strokes though 100%

I understand the point of saying that if a game is built around stealth as a focal point then something that's not stealth from the jump can't be better than the initial game that already has that established as a core element

I have a way different counter point though, entertain this

What if the game that's not a full stealth game is better at stealth than the game that's fully made for stealth?

Wouldn't that be even more heartbreaking?

I agree with everything you’ve said. But games where you can

    • shoot out lights
    • disable tvs and the ai reacts
    • hack
    • lock pick
    • knock enemies out
    • disguise yourself as someone else
    • make deaths look like an accident
    • hide bodies

And so much more are different vibes than going prone in tall grass . Again it does many stealth elements great I don’t deny that but someone saying it has greater stealth highs than mgs3 boss fights , splinter cell chaos theory number of different ways to approach things and attention to detail or blood money and recent hitman trilogy options has lost the plot to me. Are they all clunky in their own ways ? Yes . But stealth mechanics wise they do wild s***

Chaos theory has stealth coop campaign and executes it well . Yes it’s from 2005 but some making the statements have never played the top stealth games I’m talking about
