It's an extremely emotionally resonant story and contains not only a standard great Cruise performance but something truly special from Ken Watanabe, which I was happy to find out he was nominated for at the Academies.
The definite standout for me had to be the soundtrack though, probably one of the most beautiful i've heard in any film. Between this and Blood Diamond, another exceptional endeavor from Edward Zwick.
Also it had one of the best endings of all time. A small measure of peace we seek and few of us ever find
i remember crying in the theaters when they cut that Japanese dudes hair/ponytail
also remember the young Japanese king having a funny fob voice/accent but I was also young af/immature when I watched this s***
Also this tho
I have never seen this movie as a "white savior type movie". The last samurai refers to Ken Watanabe's character who really is the last one of his kind in the last era of the samurai. Tom Cruise character, so the white man, is here the broken man who has also committed atrocities in wars against native americans. Only the samurai and Japanese philosophy are able to fix him and make him a man again. So exactly the opposite of this so-called white savior complex. Its actually the Samurai who save Tom Cruise and not the other way around.
Nonetheless, the film is of course very Hollywood-like. The samurai are too romanticized and shown as men of honor, while many things in the film never happened or would never have happened in reality.
In a way this movie is also very anti white imo. Tom Cruise character was not able too feel happiness in the western society and was drown in a mass industrialized world which lacks empathy, charity and traditional values like loyalty and brotherhood.
Its the japanese culture which is able to show that its kinda superior to western culture due its connection to traditional values like honor. Furthermore the japanese way is the only way in the end where he can find small measure of peace.
Who really thinks this is a white saviour glorification didnt unterstand the movie. The movie actually depicts a tragedy set forth by the whites, but gives an opening glimpse at the lives of Samurai clans through the eyes of a relatable white person
