Most rappers just love staying complacent
Most rappers don't expand their music tastes and they don't have a lot of time to listen to different genres of music or discover different artists
Let's take Lil Wayne for example, this man doesn't listen to anybody but himself and it shows
Let's take a new artist like Roddy Ricch for example, his favorite rappers are Young Thug and Future and that's why his music sounds so much like those 2 guys
Most artists are inspired by what they hear the most because that's the s*** that they think is acceptable so they try not to go beyond that
Another example would be someone like Kendrick, this man listens to every genre of music from Jazz to Funk to Rock to Poetry and it shows in his music because the music he makes is inspired by a lot of different things
Tyler is influenced by Pharrell the most but he also listens to a lot of different types of genres and it shows in his music, Tyler understands music on a different level
Drake was making his best music when he was inspired by artists like Kanye and The Weeknd but now he's just inspired by boring soundcloud rappers
I can give 100 other examples but you get the point

Basically most rappers are inspired by what's popping the most which are artists like Future and Thug and those who are inspired by actual good artists don't get the same push because there's not many spots for those type of artists

    Facts

There's too much paying homage to the idols and things from the past people need to look forward like Kanye did in the 00s

I haven't heard his music before but I've seen an interview of him saying that Thug and Future are in his top 5
He also said Kendrick but that doesn't reflect in his music so idk

Imagine trying to say Roddy Ricch is boring. How out of touch are you?

  • Feb 3, 2020

Someone else here made a pretty good point before that a lot of rappers sound like clones at the beginning of their careers and it’s kinda true. For example Young Thug was just a Wayne clone when he first started

We need some extraordinary talent to start making waves on a mainstream scale again man

The newcomers of the last few years have been forgettable AF compared to the GOATs

    Lil Nas X? Seriously?

  • Feb 3, 2020

Good take OP. I’ve been noticing the same. The new guys will get stale and they will end up branching out eventually, or just end up getting replaced by a clone

Nigga said take lil Wayne for example. He may of said that 2 days ago but he made
    Rebirth
Was obsessed with NY rap in his early 20s
    Wanted to rap like Hov
Could do any rap style on his mixtapes. West coast slang. East coast slang etc.

He expanded his ear throughout his whole career

Well what sucks is social media presence is what makes money the quickest at this point

    Not making good projects.

    I'm talking about now
Obviously he was inspired by artists like Andre he said it in the new interview
But his new music doesn't have much inspiration he just sounds like a parody of himself at this point

Why can't -mainstream artist of the moment- be challenging and different?

Because then he wouldn't be the mainstream artist of the moment.
