As a life long horror fan it genuinely takes a lot to f*** me up. This movie did it. It’s got the scariest sound design I’ve ever heard in a movie. Since it’s super low budget, a lot of the intense stuff is filmed at night using a small flashlight and so it kinda relies on the sounds of what’s going on in the darkness. And holy f***ing s*** these sounds are terrifying. But it does have really gnarly gore and the second half of the movie is nonstop batshit insane chaos.

There’s not much plot, it’s more of an experience. But here’s what it’s about: the movie opens with a HAUNTING 911 call played over the character’s missing posters and it’s stated this is raw footage recovered from 3 memory cards found in the desert.

It’s 4 friends who travel out into the Mojave to shoot a music video. An earthquake happens and a few days later they’re awoken one night to very loud booming sounds in the distance, like a war is going on. The next day they stick a microphone in a hole in the ground and record really eerie noises, and they keep hearing the constant noise of booming in the distance. Then the next night all hell breaks loose and insanity follows, very reminiscent of the Hell scenes in Event Horizon. Basically something happens in the world while they’re in the desert and it’s like they were transported to hell.

This movie isn’t for everyone, it’s super polarizing. It’s kinda slow going at first. But if you go in knowing it’s a Lovecraftian cosmic horror movie where nothing is explained then you’ll probably like it. It’s literally just the documentation of 4 people who experience a rip in space-time, and it’s up to your interpretation of what happened.

Also it’s not like Blair Witch Project where you never get to see what’s tormenting them. This movie shows all types of s*** while also bombarding you with scary noises coming from the darkness

I wouldn’t have written all this s*** if I was exaggerating how badly this movie f***ed me up

best way to describe this movie is if Cthulhu had risen and the army was fighting him, but the characters are unaware of this since they’re in such a remote location. they can hear the war going on but can’t see it, and we quickly lost so Cthulhu f***s with the fabric of reality, and the characters document this and go insane.

or it could work as footage of the aftermath of Cabin in the Woods.

It’s wayyyyyy more engaging than Skinamarink. They’re being compared just because both movies do something new for horror. They’ve introduced something people can see the potential in, but haven’t been distilled into something the mainstream can enjoy. If you get what I’m saying. But it’s also shot in a style some people find frustrating at times (I love the style). This is like if Terrence Malick made a found footage movie lol.

Kinda like how Terrifier was a solid test run for the much more mainstream Terrifier 2. Terrifier 1 was like a proof of concept experience and the sequel took the elements that worked and packaged them into a movie the mainstream could enjoy. Give this guy a budget and the sky is the limit (Robbie Banfitch. He’s got 9 credits on this movie, so this is 100% his creation. Stars, directs, edits, visual effects, everything)

But this movie does have a narrative that it forces you to piece together. It’s the reason I can’t stop thinking about this movie. It’s such a dope concept. Super Lovecraftian mixed with David Lynch. This s*** feels like an episode of Lost with the mysteries it brings up but doesn’t answer lol

What’s your take on what happened in it?

I thought it was so f***ing thrilling, and I even enjoyed the first half. It was slow at first but never boring imo, and they did a great job sprinkling in creepy s*** in the first half if you pay close attention (I loved the part while they’re driving where the cameraman is filming the sun that’s in front of the car and he points the camera backwards, and the sun in now behind the car. he just mumbles “tha f***?” and nobody else notices lol)

I think this new wave is called A***og Horror. Skinamarink is 100% a***og horror, Outwaters can be argued it is. The Backrooms is getting an A24 movie so it’s gonna push the subgenre even further into the mainstream. I think we’re looking at a new trend era for horror movies.

The YouTube channel Local58 started it (and is still the king):

But this is still the scariest example for me personally:

I'll keep it short, but my take is that the last third of the movie is basically through that one character's experience going through purgatory, or at least the last remnants of his mind trying to piece together everything that happened (in non-linear fashion as the brain would do in such instances) before finally succumbing to death. Now how him and his friends actually died is up for debate, whether it was at the hands of the cloaked figure with the axe or himself somehow having a mental break, hallucinating/experiencing psychosis, and then just going haywire and trying to feel guilt afterwards/punish himself for what all happened

100% Evil Dead vibes. I’m looking forward to Robbie Banfitch’s career. This feels like how Moorehead & Benson’s career started, and now they’re directing multiple MCU projects.

Have you watched the prequel/sequel short films for Outwaters yet? They both came out on March 24th. They’re called Card Zer0 and File VL-624. They’re supposed to help understand what’s happening. Card Zer0 fleshes out the characters more and is set right before the movie starts, and File VL-624 apparently expands on the lore and gives better context of all the horrific s*** happening. It’s apparently scarier than the movie itself

I feel like this movie would’ve made bank if it was released as a Cloverfield movie (it easily works as a sequel to Cloverfield. the booming noises are from fighting the kaiju and the events in Cloverfield Paradox caused a dimensional rip)

Good write up, but there’s a huge problem with this interpretation: it’s presented as raw found footage. So everything the camera captured actually physically happened. So this can’t all be in his head. And the memory cards were recovered, so we know something made it back to the real world and that it wasn’t the apocalypse happening

    Scream Box. It’s only $5 a month, I’d say it’s worth it
