I remember at my previous job's interview they (CTO & Manager) asked me what do I do when I'm needing assistance with a IT related issue. I deadass told them on camera "Google". We all laughed, they agreed, but I did clean it up and mention knowledge bases as well

Lmao no fr, that's good though, treat them like the real people that they are but recoup and keep it professional. If your boss can't even show that side of them not sure it's a boss I even want.

This is very true. Confidence and professionalism is key to have success in a lot of industries, but it’s also important to note that there is always two sides to this thing and employers can make this decisions completely arbitrarily.

I’ve been on both sides of this, so it’s been both an issue and a benefit. I will say there’s no worse feeling than not getting a job you’re qualified for because someone who was under-qualified received the position based on ~vibes~

I’ll also point out that many times this works against black and brown people trying to enter and move up in white dominated industries.

Still, congrats dawg. Love to see KTT succeed.

You're absolutely right with that last paragraph. That was honestly one of the biggest things I was nervous about. As a black man, especially one in the process of growing dreads, entering into a super professional environment talking with old white men is always nerve wracking to me. I feel like the second they see the face behind the resume they're passing off judgement.

That's also how I was raised. Before my dreads I always had an afro and my dad used to give me a lot of s*** saying I needed to keep a clean cut fade if I ever wanted to make it anywhere.

Yeah they suck, but when you lack certs and other qualifications that can be your best leg up on your competition. When he told me the lady before me had a bachelor's in architecture I was like well s*** what you talking to me for?

Glad to see you enter the industry. I’m sure it needs more people like you and hopeful this company is an open-minded one that is truly accepting of all cultures.

Flat out we need to stop telling black and brown people to change their appearance in order to be ‘professional’ and this is something I’ve been fighting for the past couple of years. I’m black and latino and have been told countless times to shave my beard and dress differently if I ever wanted to succeed. These days I make a point to keep my beard and dress however I want. I know I’m a professional person and my work speaks for itself. I shouldn’t have to change because the corporate world never asks white people to change ever.

Fellow black and latino ❤️ I know jobs be confused as hell when they see a Mexican last name and my black ass show up

But yeah absolutely agree with that and it's been something I've been heavy on myself. Like dreads is something I've wanted since I was a kid, and it hurts to think embracing my culture is actively hurting me career wise where as like you said white people are never told to change themselves. They are the picture of professionalism that all other races should follow. We're a long ways off, but all Brothas like us can do is keep growing ourselves professionally and hope to shake that mindset one employer at a time.
