I just don’t buy the whole Yeezus as high concept album performance art thing. That’s just where Ye was at, I don’t think he was thinking it out as much as you are. He had already shifted his focus to fashion and just s*** those lyrics out to meet the release date

Yeezus is as polished as any other Ye album before Yeezus

It makes sense for them to be different. But in an alternate timeline, Yeezus is maximalist.

I always viewed WTT as maximal and Yeezus as minimal

Yeezus was the perfect follow up to MBDTF.

Like following up Grad with 808s

He said in an interview along with collaborators that they spent months in the studio just brainstorming ideas, yeezus definitely has depth to it

Ye even got mad at rick Rubin for saying that he wrote the lyrics in a week, if I remember correctly he said it was more like he thought those lyrics out for a while but just record it all in a week or whatever

    Yeezus is an explosive device.

it's a perfectly designed set of soundwaves/messaging programmed to detonate and destroy the past/future mental constructs that imprison the minds of free thinkers in this Matrix-like reality

Is yeezus even minimal I feel like it's pretty maximalist but package minimally with a minimal aesthetic but other than that theres a lot going on production wise and song wise in some of these songs

the minimalism aspect gets overblown to an extent, especially compared to modern music. at the time though it sounded pretty stripped back. on site and black skinhead especially

The narrative about the cover art and Rick Rubin reducing the album definitely changed people's perceptions about it, it's perhaps more minimal than some other Ye albums but definitely not more minimal than ye

Yeezus is so minimal compared to every other Kanye album before it. You can get more minimal but if we're comparing him with himself, it's very rare for him to be that stripped down. There are moments on the other albums where he's doing that like on a some of 808s or tracks like Gold Digger. On some songs that seem minimal from the other albums tho you listen back and realize there's so many layers in the samples he's using.. On the majority of Yeezus there's often only a few sounds doing most of the work compared to albums like MBDTF, WTT, Grad, LR Etc. where you've got soul samples, synths, orchestras, basslines, vocal stacks etc. all going on at the same time.

Kanye obviously played into it with the aesthetic but he's always done that. It's been a good skill of his to make the overall era in tune with the music he's making so the direction comes across clearer to people
