Pretty much this. He’s gonna do crazy numbers while a minority will be punching air online in a comment section. I think he’s pretty numb to the critics now. He knows what comes with the territory.

im not so sure about that

heartless and blinding lights are nowhere near as good as "i feel it coming" and "starboy" or "the hills" and "can't feel my face"

new album probably ain't gonna touch the last album's numbers

that might be a good thing tho, cause he might get tired of chasing hits and go back to making rnb songs again

Song is okay and cool but expecting masterpieces from Weeknd is just unrealistic. The bar for his career and style was set way too high because the blueprint for his style was cooked up by someone else who has since been cut loose, I think that's part of the reason why House of Balloons is still the best Weeknd release and probably will be forever:

Jeremy Rose produced two songs on House of Balloons - What You Need and Loft Music. His version of The Morning was absolute trash and the Illangelo + Doc beat s***s on it every day of the week. Attributing the success of HOB to Jeremy is wack.

It's not just about attributing specific songs to him: he thought of the persona and subject matter for Weeknd, who wanted to do more cliche music himself. I don't think Weeknd isn't as imaginitive himself, which leads to him repeating his song lyrics/subject matter a lot.

Shout out to Illangelo and Doc though.

how is that the weeknd is one of the biggest artists yet people keep asking for his old sound back whereas his peers, Miguel and Frank Ocean have progressed and people have not only loved it but they've been critically acclaimed.

    Genuinely curious.

I think the track is weak if compared to how explosive the singles for BBTM and Starboy were

Those singles seemed to win the majority of fans and the noise it made was intense

I enjoyed the “Heartless” single tho!!

It is pretty basic (lyrics, and the overall beat, no insane changeups) but for what it is I love it and it’s been on repeat, the 2nd half of the song really saves it for me too

Crazy that it’s so divided... People really be hating on it on ig damn... that’s the first time I’ve seen it tho, not sure what other platforms are saying, I’ve unintentionally missed it all lol

I’m also one of those people who’s hoping for dark s***, I’m not asking for trilogy, just dark s*** with substance that sounds good

Read a couple comments up that MDM didn’t sell as well, but I don’t think it’s cuz the majority of people didn’t like it, I feel like other factors such as it being a suprise EP and it being so short might have something to do with the low sales

What a shame tho, I was really f***ing with the direction of it, it really had a revamping-trilogy type feel to it, but it would make sense if he backed out of that direction to go pop again for chapter 6 to get sales and top charts

I consider “heartless” to not be dark but I do think it’s hard and I’m okay with that, lyrics like “selling dreams to these girls with their guards down” is f***ing tight and I hope he keeps that s*** up and even kicks it up a couple notches

In a nutshell I f*** with the single heavy, but I guess I understand the hate, I want to see the project in its entirety, and I’m hopeful for some dark s*** or at least something close to being dark or even hard

Because Frank doesn’t make mainstream songs. And some people did get on him for blonde because of it sounding so different from blonde.
