If an artist is averaging 100 unique monthly listeners per month, as The Weeknd has been for about a year straight now, then that artist is pretty damn popular.

It’s not like Weeknd was #1 in monthly for like a week or two. He’s consistently been at that spot for a very long time. I’m pretty sure he has the most total months at #1 ever, going all the way back to 2015

It is very useful to gauge touring demand.

For example, let’s say that an artist had the most devoted fans in the world and had a total of 1 million fans streaming their music 50 million times per day. Pure hypothetical.

That artist won’t be able to book arena venues because there simply are not enough unique listeners to routinely fill up 20K capacity locations.

Also, just to show how bad it is: it's ONE unique listener stream during a period of 28 days. So many of them could listen to one song and think ''yeah, this is bad, I won't listen to this artist again'' and then dip.
It also helps artists who are featured on the big Spotify pop-playlists thanks to their labels buying them a placement.

Once again, daily/weekly/monthly streams are more useful to gauge how popular an artist is.

We all know Weeknd is one of the most popular artists in the world and rightly so. But to see just how popular he is, you have to see how many monthly streams he is getting. The labels get paid by streams, not unique listeners.

The Weeknd has been the longest running artist at #1 since 2015. He has consistently been there for nine years, it’s clearly not just people who say “oh this song is bad” and never listen again

If you look at the artists who reach #1, it’s all superstars.

This idea that anyone with a hit song can make it that high is utterly ridiculous.
