kidxvintageAvatar and James Cameron movies in general have tremendous legs at the box office. Avatar 1 opened to like $70 million and consistently was number 1 at the box office for almost like 10 weeks i think. kept making $60-70 million each weekend, whereas the Marvel & Star Wars movies tend to teeter out after 2-3 weeks. Plus the re-release of Avatar in september did like $75 million, which is unheard of for a re-release. China loves this movie and its the first new American movie being shown in China since 2019. Titanic opened kind of low and just kept making the same amounts every weekend too. The saying in Hollywood now is that you never doubt James Cameron
I’m not doubting him, I’m just saying the state of cinema has changed drastically since 2009.
1.5 billion isn’t even a failure, that’s actually really really good for a sequel coming out 13 years later.

CherrywineThese films are more than just cgi heavy. It’s about the way the cgi is used along with the immersion into the world he created. Its not just another cgi fest, it’s a treat for the senses
Aside from that, modern cgi is generally really bad. The cgi here is mostly indistinguishable from reality. Also a lot of new never before used film tech will make its debut here
Why did top gun make so much? It was just a really good sequel right? Surely it’s not far fetched that this can outsell top gun and Spider-Man
The hype for this movie is nowhere near the hype for No Way Home. Any measurable metric will show you that.
Also Top Gun benefitted from being the first real summer blockbuster since the pandemic started, along with the great word of mouth it got. Avatar 2 doesn’t have the former.
Y’all are acting like I’m saying it’s gonna flop, I’m not saying that either. What I am saying is that it will be a big success (1.5 billion) but also nowhere near the level of the first movie
