It’s funny when y’all say it’s a Weeknd x James Cameron collaboration like Cameron mixing his vocals
Not hating tho this is big but James Cameron probably had nothing to do with Weeknd being chosen. Only reason Trav did Tenet was cause the composer was Ludwig.
Nolan was involved tho fam, but I feel like The Weeknd song will be just promotional tho
Avatar 2 will be the biggest blockbuster film of the last 5 years, even more
3B minimum.
Dawn FM was this year + he toured + Creepin + The Idol + this
For any other artist that’s a massive year
I don't think this is oversaturation.
Again, hasn't released anything in 11 months, the feature and this arent oversaturation in my eyes.
The tour isnt really relevant in this convo imo, and The Idol isn't releasing till next year.
And the next album is 2024 at earliest, when he finishes all the legs of the tour
"No one cares"
"No one remembers the characters names"
"No one writes fanfics about Avatar"
Not these tired twitter takes...
Fox really didn't do much with Avatar after 2010. The biggest thing was the theme park
But the real Avatar franchise starts now, in exactly 10 days with The Way of Water.
Then we have new movies in 2024, 2026 and 2028. Get used to it
let them talk it's avatar decade now brother
The biggest box offices in the last year are No Way Home (1.9 million), Top Gun (1.5) and Jurassic Park (1.0).
I don’t see it coming close to No Way Home because of how much hype was surrounding that movie, so the Top Gun range is the highest I think it will peak if word of mouth is good
neither top gun or nwh released in china btw
I feel like people have been saying “superhero fatigue” for half a decade now, meanwhile Wakanda Forever has been #1 at the box office since it released.
I agree that Marvel overall this year was lacking in quality, but it’s completely wrong to say that general audiences are fatigued of these movies when they’re still topping the box office for weeks at a time and reeling in billions of dollars.
And again, I don’t see how Avatar is a “change of pace” from Marvel when they’re a lot more similar than some want to admit.
Both are CGI heavy, family friendly, crowd-pleasing, big budget blockbusters. I think it’s gonna be much harder for Avatar 2 to stand out this time around since the last decade of cinema has been dominated by this specific type of film
difference is mcu is starting to only appeal to comic book nerds who are actually keeping up with every movie and disney+ show
there's like 18 projects this phase, most people cant watch all that. you're not taking your grandma to see Dr Strange 2 or Thor 4 cause they'd have no idea whats going on
movies like top gun and maybe Avatar have the benefit or reaching every demographic and generation cause the story is based mostly only in that movie. this is also why the first Black Panther reached so many people.
It’s the biggest movie event/release in like a decade. Probably going to break every single record
You’re delusional if you think this is a bigger movie event than Infinity War, Endgame, or even No Way Home
Even The Force Awakens was more anticipated than this

Ehhh idk, Cameron likes to have big ballad songs play in his movies. Titanic had Celine Dion My Heart Will Go On, Avatar 1 had a Leona Lewis song (the rerelease made me remember its actually like a great song ahaha). I’d bet one of these songs is a huge record that ends the movie
1. Cameron + cast have alluded multiple times that the story is quite emotional and a huge step up from the first one (which already had a solid, albeit basic story)
2. The same way people return to capeshit for the characters is the same way people return to avatar to visit the world of pandora. We will see how compelling these new characters are. Also, I think that people will do more repeat viewings than they typically do for capeshit films
3. This was a miscommunication on my part, I don’t think ALL marvel films lack heart, just most of them. My main point was that avatar 2 isn’t another corporate blockbuster. It’s a passion project from one of the most brilliant minds in cinema. I still believe this film will pack much more heart than any other marvel film has ever been able to do
We’ll have to agree to disagree. It’ll be much easier to discuss this after avatar drops and we see it do 3 billion over the next few months
Y’all are failing to realize that a big part of the first film’s success was how groundbreaking it was for 2009
This is now a franchise driven off the strength of its visual effects releasing a sequel in a climate of cinema where CGI heavy movies have been the standard for a decade now

Even still, superhero movies remain at the forefront of the box office year after year, so I think the superhero fatigue criticism is still inaccurate, as it has been for years
I also really don’t think Avatar is a big change of pace from MCU fair, they’re much more similar in nature than Avatar fans want to admit

Avatar and James Cameron movies in general have tremendous legs at the box office. Avatar 1 opened to like $70 million and consistently was number 1 at the box office for almost like 10 weeks i think. kept making $60-70 million each weekend, whereas the Marvel & Star Wars movies tend to teeter out after 2-3 weeks. Plus the re-release of Avatar in september did like $75 million, which is unheard of for a re-release. China loves this movie and its the first new American movie being shown in China since 2019. Titanic opened kind of low and just kept making the same amounts every weekend too. The saying in Hollywood now is that you never doubt James Cameron

These films are more than just cgi heavy. It’s about the way the cgi is used along with the immersion into the world he created. Its not just another cgi fest, it’s a treat for the senses
Aside from that, modern cgi is generally really bad. The cgi here is mostly indistinguishable from reality. Also a lot of new never before used film tech will make its debut here
Why did top gun make so much? It was just a really good sequel right? Surely it’s not far fetched that this can outsell top gun and Spider-Man
Sunflower outsold

Unless the movie turns out to be a pack of ass and is widely critically panned, it’s breaking every single record ever, you can quote me and make fun of me if I’m wrong
This movie ain’t getting past 1.5B at the box office
Biggest sequel flop incoming

This is KEY information
I’m not expecting crazy fw numbers from TWOW, but it will very small drop off rates

Wanna bet a ban on it
That’s a new level of flexing, always amazes me to see just how far that kid from my city who made House of Balloons came..

nobody knew he was in 2009 when Avatar released, now in 2022 he is one of the biggest stars in the world and about to work with Avatar 2
Good discussion itt
