Theoretically, it should be my favourite Weeknd album but it just doesn't hit like the other projects do

I always consider BBTM and Starboy the albums where he is still trying to figure out what his sound is going to be in the Pop world. This current trilogy is him realizing what that is and perfecting it.

another great read. also, the depeche mode violator comparison was so spot on, i never really thought about it that way. it does kinda sound like something dave gahan after a quick rendez-vous with the devil would make + trap drums

i think it’s that and marking his place in the pop world, like after hours couldn’t have made the waves it did if it wasn’t for starboy and bbtm. he used those albums to show the world (and his label) just how much of a superstar he can be all while still staying true to himself. And this trilogy is using everything he has to his advantage. The global reach and stardom of the last two albums, and the artistic vision of the first trilogy and kiss land.

I like how he keeps going back to Kiss Land in ways with narratives and story lines in his albums with this trilogy. Audio movies are back, something he didn’t do with BBTM and Starboy, MDM is like a little short film in audio form.

the real hot take I have is that I love BBTM

Massive hit singles & some good album cuts but also a lot of other tracks that miss the mark for me in my opinion.
