He needs to come back with a classic of the ages, music from the future type s*** since all these music publications wanna act like he doesn't exist
So... I think The Weeknd is too "global" now. I think he has reached a point where he's more popular outside North America than in North America. The Madonna route. I'm not American or Canadian, so I can't speak for yall, but that's what it seems to me.
And I feel like being ignored by these things is one of the ramifications of this phenomenon... Maybe he's just not culturally important for these US publications.
I was gonna write lengthy post about this but I don't even know if the original point is true. But this is 100% what happens with another singer that I like, and I wonder if this also applies to Abel.
You hit the nail on the dot.... but.... there is another factor. Post 2020 Weeknd has been insanely different than where he initially rose to megastardom (around 2015-2016). His hits went from The Hills Starboy Can't feel my face to Save Your Tears Creepin Blinding Lights... its an intentional shift he did which now means he's more aligned with the pop world rather than the hip hop world... which as we know is where most, if not, all of the culture stems from in North America. Look at artists like Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, etc, as soon as they done dropping their music nobody checks in for them unless it has to do with some relationship or unnecessary drama, and this is now where we got to accept Abel is at this point

you named 4 pop songs in there, one R&B joint with a rap verse and The Hills which is fusion of a lotta influences lol. your argument makes zero sense

you're meaning to tell me you don't see a clear direction change to what he's been doing post 2020? The man is obviously moving in an intentional way with his career. Before 2020 we had him doing random features with gucci mane, French Montana, etc. Fast forward now he's been doing everything what a pure pop artist would do (which is not a bad thing at all), he's dipped in the Spanish market, has constantly featured on female pop albums, and much more. We have to accept the change and not act like its there

I mean I kinda get it but at the same time itâs not like heâs completely abandoned his hip hop influences either. You forget he has songs with Lil Baby, Young Thug, 21 savage, Nas, not to mention all the s*** he just did with Metro and Future. He does do more pop features but I donât think itâs as hard as a change as youâre making it out to be

I guess we just seeing his career differently cause to me he definitely wants to be seen as one of the biggest pop stars of his time not just an R&B artist who changed the early 2010s sound of the genre. Also to kinda counter your points on those specific features... Young thug was only cause that Belly song was never gonna be big + its his label so he kinda has to, 21 savage & metro was a remake that he knew would blow up (also still just a pop record with a rap verse), future & metro feature are prob due to cash and metro being on the management team, Lil baby was so the soundtrack could get more attention

brother he's wanted to be a popstar since 2007
Yup thats facts... because of that mentality, I geniuinely think if Gasoline wasn't the first actual track of Dawn Fm, people woulda stuck around longer on that first week. Sucks how fast listeners check out as soon as the artist tries something unfamiliar

ik that, which is exactly why he's been pigeonholed until 2020. Thats honestly the whole reason why Kiss Land was even made, he wanted to show the listeners that he can continues that dark sound he saw success with from the mixtapes, but now he's doing the pop records he always wanted to do... also Out Of Time is top 10 weeknd song all time

sounds like ai
yay the weeknd and eminem song !
I need several ten minute tracks on this s***
Also need a s*** talking track. F*** the industry up.
Take your time this could release in 2026 for all I care
he aint have one of these on dawn and it made me sad

its gotta sound WAY different tho
anything 80s sounding and it wont have as big as an impact
