This is the same thing as white people obsessing over Plato and Aristotle and stupidly asking why colleges don’t require them as reading for all students

Like are we going to conveniently ignore that black hiphop heads exist or that most white people who listen to hiphop don’t care about the genre’s history?

Bro is acting like the only black hiphop fans that exist are hood rap fans and romanticizing all white hiphop fans like they all care about the history. I don’t like that s***

the barrier of entry for a white guy to talk about hip hop is probably higher. the average rap fan in general doesnt know s***. hell the average person doesnt know much outside of whatever is played on the radio

  • Aug 18, 2025

White people are always out to elevate themselves above a culture as though that’s a better place to be

It’s especially egregious with hiphop heads

It’s a black genre. You can’t be above something you’re not a part of.

  • Aug 18, 2025

i think that take is just contrarian s*** meant to stir up engagement. saying white rap fans are more knowledgeable about the origins of hip hop is a nothing burger that someone must have come up with solely from a couple of anecdotal experiences (probably social media).

i'm a white guy who loves hip hop, ive went and listened to all the all time greats just to have better conversations about music and to appreciate them, but i would be lying if i said i was raised on rap music other than s*** like the Beastie Boys and some Outkast. most of my black friends were raised listening to hip hop and for that reason, will probably always know more about its history than me. so there's my anecdotal experience

This is because when a lot of non-black/brown folk get introduced to hip hop, it’s later on in their lives, so they go into it wanting to research everything that they missed. They’ll study up on all the legends from as close to the very beginning as possible and work their knowledge up to the present, like they’re finally watching a popular show they were putting off for the first half of their lives and are starting from season 1.

Not saying that’s a bad thing

Meanwhile u got a lot of folks who just live hip hop and their immersion in that world isn’t really a big deal to them, it’s kinda just what it is and they like what the people they’re surrounded by listen to. Not from a place of ignorance like the thread seems to be suggesting, but it’s a natural part of life for them, while with the other folks it’s a deep dive into another culture

Edit: I wrote this like it’s the only reason and that’s not true lmao. Definitely not the only reason and there are other posts in earlier pages that make sense of this in other ways too

ehh its alot of korean americans who don’t know s*** about the culture and can barely speak the language

and also a lot of white ppl who are way too obsessed w korean culture

  • Aug 18, 2025

All in all most people just don’t care about the history of music in general

It’s cool to disrespect legends and s*** on the past, until ppl start to reject that sort of mindset then maybe people will start to respect the art form again
