I see you isn’t bad but I think they need to come back with something undeniably great
yeah I want them to put out something that'll quiet some of the detractors even though most ppl view I see you as a bounce back
like I said in my post on the last page, coexist has some really cool ideas and i'd honestly like it if their next album was like that but more focused cause as much as I like I see you it is kinda safe
I think my problem with Coexist (still like the album a lot) is that the song structures are really progressive on most of the songs and I don't think that kind of format works for them.
The album production wise blows the debut out the water, but I don't think they formed songs as strongly as they did on there. I See You was kind of a good blend of the two + more influence from In Colour.
want your thoughts on this cause IIRC you got coexist > debut

Funny bc your complaints about coexist are the reasons I like it.
I feel like the soundscapes they crafted on it are really subtle yet so intricate and the drum work by Jaime fit perfectly within the world they created on that album. Shimmering guitars, improved song writing, wobbling bass, Idk the album works as a whole for me. I just relistened to the debut a few nights ago for the first time in years and while I still like it I like it for certain songs and moments now not so much the whole. Like who has an instrumental as iconic and tone setting as Intro on their debut album, I also rediscovered my love for Islands, Fantasy and Shelter
But idk I feel like coexist is a more cohesive album. What do you think?
@americana
Can you define a progressive song structure? Like in that there’s less hook verse hook verse?

Precisely. Their entire thing is being this deconstructed and raw, if not abstract, set of emotions and it works so perfectly on Coexist with things like unfold and sunset and swept away. It allows everyone to shine individually while having this sense of unreal cohesion. The entire time everyone’s wearing their hearts on their sleeve
I absolutely love both projects with my heart regardless. Coexist is simply far more ambitious but I can appreciate how grounded and straightforward XX is

I really can't see Coexist as a whole more "cohesive" than xx in terms of sounds. If you meant flow-wise sure, but xx feels like this really idiosyncratic project from front to back.
I agree with everything you say about the album production-wise, but to me that album really feels like they threw a lot of good ideas on a wall but couldn't really scale back into individual moments like the debut. That's why I can listen to that album as a whole and enjoy it, but no really have too many songs I pick from it that are super meaningful as the debut.
My fav on the album is Fiction

Yeah, it's way less verse-hook-verse-hook and more of a stitching together of a bunch of ideas into one.
I think of a song like Reunion for something like that. Album kinda feels more like Jamie going in and messing around with some concepts that the band had which is funny cause people call I See You the album where Jamie had more control but nah Coexist feels like the one he f***ed around on the most

I totally agree. I see you is most all three coming in and finishing the trilogy off

You’re right in terms of how XX sounds, it’s all very quiet, lowkey - “cohesive” you’re also right that nothing sounds like it still. it’s possible I just prefer how coexists sounds with the more electronic influence plus it’s the one I go back to most, I legit haven’t listened to the debut in at least 5 years maybe more until the other night.
I just finished relistening to coexist again, I’ll do I See You next bc it’s been years since I heard that too
What
I mean the interviews they had recently made it sound like stuff is in the works
I'd imagine we'd get Jamie LP2 before the next album but idk
Revisited the debut album & it holds up incredibly today. The production is just exceptional. I’d say it’s carried more by the writing compared to their following two records.
Bro I literally watch these videos like once a week
!https://youtu.be/kTdjrw7sRG4!https://youtu.be/WJ9rflGsNEg!https://youtu.be/FluOfEMEmWQs*** is so goat on e or acid or both
used to listen their albums almost everyday
saw the xx live and was prolly the best live performance I’ve seen so far
Jamie xx is absolutely insane going dumb on like 4 mpc, 3 synths, and a bunch of live percussion all by himself
also love how their music sounds very minimal but epic at the same time. Also love how their s*** sounds kinda happy but also very melancholic at the same time (alot of it has to do w the steel drums and harps Jamie likes to use). I know they said they chose to keep it simple so they would be able to play their songs w ease during live shows but i still like to think they are masters of restraint.
man still so mad about the first video getting taken down
why was I not mentioned in this wtf
wait there I go
thought this was a new thread
Y’all think they’ll ever release another album?
yes confirmed
next year most likely tbh
this
