If an upcoming rapper or someone who isn't super lyrically intensive has great beats, so many people act like they're being "carried by their beats".
If an established rapper has great beats, they're usually properly acknowledged, even if their rapping is lackluster on these tracks. People say they have "great beat selection".
This double standard just compounds upon itself, rappers have a hard time losing this reputation (good or bad).
People just need to acknowledge rappers who make good music as talented, if it was so easy to get carried by beats then there would be a lot more rappers out there making tolerable music.
who tf is u its my first time seeing you stfu irrevelant f***
I will f*** you in the mouth if you don't stop
Thread derailed at record speeds
When you are new you have to prove you really rap. When you are established you have to prove you still have good taste, simple as that.
I agree with OP.
The reason of this problem is kinda about people doing gatekeeping and not accepting new artists to the ''game'' because of their insecurities or laziness or even jealousy cuz they be seeing younging kinds glowing up while they sitting home doing nothing
But the real thing is if a beat is good or nah Its mostly about how the rapper uses that beat. I mean unless somebody lil waynes your song that beat is his and he used the beat a way and both parts are responsible for it. There might be a great beat an OG rapper used but if he doesnt fit it its not that great Its all about chemistry if you ask me and thats what people that are hating really missing

I understand that a bit when evaluating artists because you can look at what they're likely to put out in the future, but I think it bleeds into the discussion around specific albums and tracks too much.

Its all about catalogue imo. When you are established you already rapped your ass off in a variety of production, the next natural step is keeping the music good, trying different things. Thats why nowadays you see great rappers dropping half baked songs over dope beats, they already dropped bar after bar, we know what they are able to do.
Meanwhile, when you are just starting you can even jump on old boom bap and still sound good if you are skilled, cus people aint expecting innovating music from you, they expect to see if you are worth listening to or have something to said.
Thats why Lil Wayne tried to do rock, to do something different. Same reason Kendrick went from electronic sound to jazzy beats while doing baby voice. Another recent example that comes to my mind is Gunna, he gets a lot of s*** like he aint talented but if you see his catalogue boy has done everything, even singing, now he just chooses great beats with vibey flows even if the cadence feels simple at first.
i would say something like jpegmafia i got drawn through the production but his performance especially on last two records he has immensely improved
Love the dude but Carti definitely does/has coasted on his beats/aesthetics
yeah i mean that guy literally has no value lyrically
"Rich, b**** (Hold on)
Got a rich clique (Hold on)
I'm suckin' on the c*** (Hold on)
She suckin' on the d*** (Yeah)
Give that ho a tip (Yeah)
Told her, "Buy some kicks" (Kicks)"

doesnt mean his vocals dont have any value sonically b

He uses his vocals as an instrument so I'll give that to him. But his lyrical presence is non existent, it's just kind of sad
Cause established rappers proved they were good on lame 00s beats
