His time as a battle rapper is overstated. He wasn’t what people act like he was.

2nd place in the rap Olympics is pretty good and honestly he should've won.

  • Feb 23, 2020

Nobody questions any of this. But he’s been bad longer than he was good.

Interesting I feel like they’re both peak rap storytelling. They’re similar as artists too that’s why I asked.

I like Hov on renegade more

And y’all gotta stop running to 8 Mile to say he was battle rapper

He was a legitimate Battle Rapper when he was coming up.

That's how he linked up with D12 and that's how his music got to Jimmy and Dre.

We cant make that argument from a 2020 lens though.

Just about any commercial rapper who was known for battle rapping prior to the late 2000s, or were most active in it before then, got destroyed when battling in the past 10 years, Joe Budden and Cassidy namely.

Just about any mainstream rapper who last battled before SMACK blew up would get washed by today's standards, even the Jay Zs and DMXs of rap.

Even someone as great as Wayne said he isnt good enough to do URL style Battle Rap so it isn't an accurate knock on Em imo.

Cass came back and won one. People got him beating Diz. Joe had decent material too everything else was just off. Put that to the side tho because it’s kinda irrelevant. Even back during Ems time as a battle rapper it’s not like he was a god. Juice was that nigga back then and he beat Em and won scribble jam the year Em did it, Rhymefest (also beat Em) won scribble jam years later, Eyedea who doesn’t even get talked about enough for doing it won scribble jam, etc. the way Em get talked about for battling isn’t even accurate it’s just his image. He was nice but there was tons of niggas that was nice if he wasn’t Eminem he really wouldn’t be noteworthy and that’s what I mean when I say it’s overstated. Now back to Cass, he was really what people claimed him to be. He was really kicking niggas ass and battling a lot back then and east coast battling was different. They’d come clipped up with their best verses and just went. While the scribble jam format isn’t something anyone can do it’s really not the battles that shaped how we view battle rappers.

lmfao do people really think the battle rap thing only came from the 8 mile movie? f***in ded

imagine thinking that a white dude in a time where whites arent accepted in rap stepping onto the stage and holding his own and in most cases obliterating his opponents straight in their face isnt some of the hardest s*** of all time. Do we even need to mention that all of this took place in DETROIT? as for all this blase about these other s***ters even being considered battle rappers at all, bar Cassidy, I'm fairly certain Eminem could handle his own. Lil Wayne can barely form a f***ing coherent sentence, and has been on multiple freestyle shows mumbling and bumbling over words, so of f***ing course he doesnt think he can do URL style battles LMFAO

hindsight is always going to be 20/20. This revisionist s*** has to stop honestly. Do a majority of people listen to Beethoven or even classical music these days? f*** no, but that doesnt tarnish his f***ing legacy or the fact that the man was god damn goated out of his f***ing mind and that people who study or listen to music can appreciate him or learn something from it.

And this statement goes for anyone we try to f***ing s*** on down the road. Yes, music loses potency over years, even some of the best albums of all time seem "not that great" eventually. That isnt the album or the artists fault, that is just time wearing it out because of the amount of times youve heard it or had it mentioned to you, or some f***ing idiot trying to be edgy and force his own agenda onto others to have a different opinion than everyone else.

It is fair to say that in hindsight, Em's battling isn't as good as today's generation possibly, but if you word it that way, you have to include that back then, he was pretty much verbally abusing some of these dudes.

ur obviously hating. man said battle rap wasnt good when someone pointed out he got 2nd at the rap olympics.

then proceeds to say there were other better battle rappers back then

Yes, you can be a good battle rapper and still not be better than other people. Keep writing them paragraphs of hatred

Never said it wasn’t good I said it was different. I also said he wasn’t a god back then like people say he was, which he wasn’t. I also think he’s one of the most skilled rappers ever I just have a little bit of info about battle rap culture and I’m not a d*** eater. I’ve heard people that play a big part in battle rap say similar s*** about Em and his battle rap legacy it’s never hate it’s just being realistic.

It’s ok for y’all to admit you have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to his battle rap history that’s fine. You know he did it and if that’s all that matters that should be enough for y’all.
