Champagne Poetry top 2 Drake intro
Was going to make this exact thread lol, beat me to it.
Tbh I have mixed feelings about it. At first I hated it, then I grew to really like it, now I’m kind of whatever about it.
On one hand I pretty much like every song (some more than others) but on another I feel like its not a great listen front to back. I don’t really fw the sequencing, seems sloppy and all over the place to me. And its too long to listen to all at once. I typically listen to it on shuffle and skip around until I land on one of my favs.
At this point Drake is a 10 year veteran and a professional in the game so I don’t expect him to make “bad” music but CLB just feels a lot more shallow creatively than I expected it to. A collection of 21 dope Drake songs. No more no less. He could’ve easily called it a mixtape or playlist and it wouldn’t have made a difference.
I know a lot of y’all young fans don’t understand these type of critiques but I come from the era where an album was more than just a collection of songs to shuffle. Albums used to be works of art that expressed creative ideas all on their own beyond the songs themselves. Even Jay-Z, who Drake emulates, would really put a lot of effort into crafting masterful bodies of work that had a cohesive feel creatively and he would occasionally be a little daring and do something to break new ground from time to time. Not every album but fairly often. Jay-Z is creatively conservative when compared to a Kanye or Kendrick Lamar but The Blueprint was actually super ground breaking when it dropped.
The sped up soul samples are common place in mainstream rap nowadays but back then they definitely weren’t. That sound was more so associated with underground rap while electronic based production devoid of any soul dominated popular rap at the time. The Blueprint merged the sample chops from the underground with the polish of mainstream rap while boasting some of his best flows and songwriting to that point. That albums influence is directly responsible for a song like LPF being able to chart in the top 5 on the hot 100 20 years later.
Its s*** like that man. I wanted to be able to speak about CLB like that for this generation. I wanted it to be masterful, ground breaking, influential, etc. I wanted it to stand apart from “just another Drake album." I wanted it to be special to me. Sadly its not and that’s really disappointing. I will always hold SFG, TC, NWTS, and IYRTITL in high regard and they were all groundbreaking for one reason or another in their own right but I don’t feel that way about CLB or any Drake project post 2015. The way things are going it feels like his most exciting music is behind him which kinda sucks.
That being said tho I still fw the songs for the most part so I guess it doesn’t matter. Even writing this feels very routine and blah. I know the d*** riders are going to come attacking me for having the audacity to critique my current favorite artist so have at it. Just make sure your argument makes some type of logical sense before you start typing please and thank you.
It's the closest we'll get to an R&B album from him. No standout singles, almost sounds like an album of deep cuts to me top 3 to me fr
Album is Phenomenal. Time will tell
how it ranks but it’s Top 3 for me rn
NWTS
IYRTITL
CLB
been a fan of drake since day one but as an unbiased fan who doesn't give a f*** who the artist is,
the album is still another let down.........
like a handful of songs on it.

same this s*** is the definition of mid
I'm willing to bet that I've liked drake longer than most of these stans too simply bc of age (I'm about to be 27 and been a fan since 2008)
so as an unbiased and not delusional opinion it's genuinely a 4/10

my reply wasn't directed at you lmao chill
and I'll keep it a buck but drake stans probably have the least diverse musical palette of any fan base
I listen to plenty of music and all genres not just hiphop

using the oh y’all must be new fans as the premise to your talking point is a s*** argument
but I respect your opinion
i personally listen to all kinds of s***
what’s your main issue with the album?
i have a few of my own too
curious

that was to give my opinion validity not to put newer fans down
bc apparently you a drake hater if you don't like CLB on this website
my main issue with the album is it sounds formulaic/generic
I'm tired of the same drum and hi hat patterns in popular hip hop and they're all over CLB. People been using the same patterns since like 2017
I genuinely like Papi's Home, Fair Trade, and Fountains but that's it

I can see that
what do you think about the production
ngl
the production is a huge highlight for me
what I think could of done this album some good would of been overall structure of the songs
some songs sound kind of all over the place as far as the structure goes
if that makes sense
i think the songs that have more structure tend to be received better
think NFITI, 7am, Race My mind, Pipe down, Fair trade
some songs like Papis home could of been better by having more verses and an actual hook etc
he also should of had more rap on this and balance the rnb with rap better like he did with NWTS
