Trump talked about trying to get Congress to push for more school choice. What is the consensus on this? Is it for certain detrimental? Is it positive? What are the sides to it?

Then telling everyone privatization is good because the competition helps and the private option performs better without mentioning how the public one is underfunded

    How so

literally just takes the money away from public school funding and distributes it into private schools.

school choice is a terrible idea and is not a real solution.

I was sent to a private all-boys catholic school for like 4 months as punishment freshman year of high school. Dumbest people i’ve ever met went there.

Every single student got straight As and they sent like 6 kids to Harvard that year. Literally just rich families paying for grades. Despicable

Education reform should start with the curriculum, it shouldn’t just be auctioning off public school funds

As a teacher, I'll tell ya right this is top of the list for most damaging things Trump has done while in office and why I want him out yesterday.

Can't teach in a public school when money that is desperately needed is being funneled into private/charter schools, and while I'm sure there are some solid teachers at those schools, the majority are probably not (given how horrible the benefits and salaries are. I've heard most teaches do not stay around for more than 3 years. Imagine learning in a "school" like that).

yea yk that's always how i saw it. why have private PreK-12th grade instituiions? to me all it seems like is it guarantees colleges that the kid comes from money and will pay everything they're charged. grades easily manipulated too. seems so sus

  • Jun 12, 2020

just simply along the lines of private schools not having a minimum amount of days they must be in session for seems suspect. i had a private school near me growing up and they'd always have more snowdays because it did not matter to them, they did not have to make up the days or take them away from other breaks

  • Jun 12, 2020

modern public schooling is a sham but private schooling is a religious-tinted sham so take your pick lol

Nah private schools are fire as f***. We just have no reason to be funneling public funds to privately owned institutions that’s the dumbest s*** ever. It’s one thing when public dollars go to science research but K-12 private education? What?

you're right, I guess I'm just saying that whenever a debate like this takes place over how to fix issues in the education system, you have to balance theory vs practice, the theory of private schools doesnt necessarily imply that its more of just a result of how theyve been implemented poorly in this country, alongside a lot else of the education system

    True.

Money is the short answer to fixing the education system. Also putting more emphasis on trades and not forcing college on 100% of students

Govt wants that loan interest tho.

i think a large part of fixing the system should rely on decentralization. not the republican type of pseudo-decentralization, nor like privatization, but we need to bring back politics, business, and livelihoods to local communities. this currently method of trying to hyper-globalize and hyper-centralize everything under the same "one fits all approach" is one of the worst things we've done in the US. this also is next to things like you said, where we should be phasing out the institution of college in its current form and move it back to be solely for domestic research, and instead focus on pushing trades and local economic participation

People should have the right to pay for the education they want. Banning private schools is pretty much unconstitutional.
