Sitting on my back porch, fire crackling, listening to Kendrick Lamar’s highly regarded album, To Pimp A Butterfly, while sipping on an Absolute Lime & Cucumber* (fucking horrible) i realized that this album has some high highs (U, Momma, alright, hood politics, these walls), there are a good amount of misses. He had a great thought process into this album but idk if he had the strength to carry that process for 16 songs.

This ranks behind GKMC (classic and genre defining album) and DAMN. for me.

*this was after multiple beers and John Daly mixed drinks. PM me if you need info on these.

This album is very good. Calling it trash is stupid, but calling it a classic is almost as equally as ridiculous.

even the lows of the album(for free, you ain’t gotta lie, mortal man) still have great substance in the lyrics. one of the rare conscious hip hop albums that doesn’t come off so preachy it detracts from enjoying it

instrumentally it’s f***ing great. there were better bangers in the last decade but you’d be hard pressed to find an album with such creative and varied instrumentals

it’s like mbdtf where it has so little influence because no one else could’ve pulled that s*** off
