There's a camp that's overcompensating by heaping tons of praise on the new season because they're convinced that it's only men who don't like the series and don't want to see female leads in a show, then you've got another camp that treats this season like it's the worst thing to ever happen to TV since Tosh.O, but the truth is that True Detective has never been prestige TV as a whole.

Fr I don't think the first season was as magical as people are acting, nor was this a total abomination. Just kinda sucked.

Came across a guy on Twitter who’s a bit glad that his pitch for S4 didn’t work out, just bc he doesn’t have to deal with Nic’s bullshit

It’s so odd that they apparently had an original crime series with freaking Josie Foster attached & decided they needed to attach it to TD or did that decision get made before she was even casted

Title: True Detective: Echoes of the Past

    Synopsis:

In the fifth season of True Detective, we return to the bayous of Louisiana, where the echoes of the past refuse to fade. Set in a small town haunted by a dark history of corruption and secrets, the season follows two detectives, each grappling with their own demons, as they unravel a twisted conspiracy that spans generations.

Detective Marcus Hayes, a seasoned investigator with a troubled past, returns to his hometown after years away, seeking redemption and closure. Partnered with Detective Elise Rivers, a sharp and ambitious newcomer with a mysterious background, Marcus is drawn into a case that dredges up memories of his own traumatic childhood.

The season kicks off with the discovery of a young woman's body in the swamp, her murder mirroring a series of unsolved killings from decades earlier. As Marcus and Elise delve deeper into the investigation, they uncover a network of corruption reaching into the highest echelons of power, where old alliances and family ties hold sway.

Haunted by visions of his abusive father and the unsolved disappearance of his sister years ago, Marcus struggles to maintain his grip on reality as the lines between past and present blur. Meanwhile, Elise wrestles with her own demons, haunted by memories of a traumatic event that drove her to become a detective.

As they follow the trail of clues, Marcus and Elise find themselves ensnared in a web of deceit and betrayal, where the sins of the past cast long shadows over the present. Along the way, they encounter a cast of characters, each with their own secrets to hide and their own reasons for wanting the truth to stay buried.

As the investigation reaches its climax, Marcus and Elise must confront the ghosts of their pasts and risk everything to expose the truth. In a final showdown with the forces of corruption, they must rely on each other to survive and bring justice to a town plagued by darkness.

True Detective: Echoes of the Past is a gripping tale of redemption, betrayal, and the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of unspeakable evil. With its haunting atmosphere, complex characters, and twisting plot, it continues the tradition of the acclaimed first season while forging its own path into the heart of darkness.

Isn't it also because that first season took years of planning as well? Also, is Pizza that much of a nightmare to work with? I'm talking David O. Russell peak a****** levels here

Absolutely believe this was intended to be a one off thing called Night Country that HBO demanded be branded as True Detective for the name recognition, and had them shoehorn in all the references to Season 1, because legit none of them needed to be there, they’re purely aesthetic and not necessary.

The tone and feel is completely different as well, outside of featuring two main characters who are cops, that’s about all it has in common with other season of TD.

I wonder if that was always the result of the murder mystery before it became TD. I feel like they would’ve moved in more of supernatural direction if it wasn’t TD.

Doesn’t feel earned and is lowkey kinda hilarious when they all run in.

Honestly if you take away the two all-time-great character actors in S1, you’re not left with something worth this level of ego. Him and Fukunaga are both hacks, but at least Fukunaga makes some money for his bosses. Pizzolatto seems like a Taylor Sheridan but with no hits
