you gotta be goat to get to that level. a privilege reserved for the greats

brudda mads mikkelsen for example is one of the greatest actors alive yet in American film he can only get work as a blockbuster villain, …so many prestige directors don’t look past convention/trendiness in terms of casting or their “buddies” ‘who kiss the ring’

Sometimes unknowns just can’t capture that energy that a bigger name actor can. I can’t imagine any other actor playing Alonzo Harris other than Denzel.

and a lesser known actor is just going to try to capture that energy denzel would bring like in four brothers John Singleton originally wanted Denzel Washington to play Victor Sweet but he couldn’t commit and they got somebody who was just imitating Denzel.

street casting when done right def makes a movie feel more “real”

But when the unknown do hella well it turns them into a star so it’s like never ending cycle I appreciate both in a film, brad Pitt is a star but his looks kinda forced him into that he wants to be a character actor and he’s great at it like Ed Norton level

"I auditioned for a project and it was between me and another girl who is a far better actress than I am, far better, but I had the followers, so I got the job. It’s not right, but it is part of the movie industry now."

I think we just appreciate seeing new faces. When I watch an old foreign movie it may star an ‘unknown’ to me, and I appreciate that, but it’s also totally possible that they were a star in their time and place. So it’s about exposure rather than talent per se

I mostly just don’t like that all the ‘big time’ prestige directors latch on to the same few guys & they copycat each other in that respect no less than your average studio invention, in theory they should have a better eye for undiscovered or underutilized talent

it really feels like a toss up

like every quentin movie with an ensemble has worked for me, because the story itself is incredible so no matter who’s on screen it’ll still be engaging

same with adam mckay, his films have really delivered for me because the distinct story he’s trying to tell outweighs everything else

Tarantino’s castings are inspired for me, he has favorites but he casts them in supporting roles usually …because of his ensemble style he’s always has some lesser considered picks…dude basically discovered Christoph Waltz

I thought it was weird that his vocal inflections were very Denzel like but once I read the interview it all made sense
