I'm convinced people who like The Witch are doing it because they're afraid to get called a contrarian if they don't. It's one of the most boring movies I've seen

It elicits the same feelings I had while watching the Shining tbh. Not particularly eventful but was unsettling on a psychological level. It’s tense and uncomfortable. The family dynamic is awkward along with the eventual deterioration of the family. That alone was unsettling, not counting the supernatural stuff that occurs throughout.

Understandable why some wouldn’t like it, it’s a slow burn for sure.

They are hating on Disney in particular because of that. They are proponents of independent film and telling narrative driven stories and they are seeing those films suffer because of Disney monopolizing the entertainment industry and control movie theaters to make it harder for those voices to get out.

these guys dont care about that. they're just mad that they're not getting funded like they used to. I guarantee if Scorsese and all these other white old directors could get funding they would be silent on new and independent filmmakers struggles.

also Marvel movies may be the only saving grace for these theaters. People dont even go to the theaters like that anymore. Its not Marvels fault that the only time people step foot in theaters to not see the same typical remakes and films that lack diversity is to see the Avengers.

Scorsese just got the biggest budget of his career from Netflix. and FFC just got a sci fi epic funded. You seriously think these guys aren't getting funded like they used to? You're factually wrong. They have always been advocates for funding independent cinema.

People don't go to the theaters like that anymore because of Disney restricting theaters from showing great independent cinema. Because of that, the alternate options are usually some other garbage studio cinema. Good Time was one of the most talked about films from the past few years, but it barely made money because it didn't get shown in many theaters

A number of theaters have shut down because they can't afford to share the % of revenue Disney demands from them and still stay afloat. I don't know how you even have the audacity to think Marvel is a saving grace for theaters. They are literally the reason the game has moved into streaming.

Scorsese struggled to get The Irishman funded. Its a passion project NO ONE wanted to fund due to the expensive de-aging tech. S*** he even had to do shady business to get Wolf of Wallstreet

And yet he got a 200 million dollar check from Netflix. He isn't out here begging for 20 million lmfao. And he just got another big budget project coming with Leo after this. Scorsese is one of the biggest directors alive, he has no issue with getting s*** funded.

And keep in mind he isn't making trash capeshit like Disney. He is making original films in genres that aren't trendy right now.

Im just convinced you're delusional. A quick google search would show you that if Netflix didnt fund this movie NO OTHER STUDIO WOULD'VE. It was literally Netflix of nothing.

‘The Irishman’ is a risky film. No one else wanted to fund the pic for five to seven years. And of course we’re all getting older. Netflix took the risk"

You realize he has tried to get the Irishman funded for years. The reason it is getting made now is because a studio is finally putting in the money they need. It isn't like he would be out of work if they didnt fund this. He can get plenty of other projects funded and he literally has a new project he is working on right after this.

you realize Disney literally has been requiring a bigger cut from theaters in exchange for showing their movies right?
Disney literally tried to ban a major newspaper from press screenings for exposing corrupt business practices about them.
They are extremely controlling on all their products and it literally has caused smaller theaters to shut down because they have killed the market for smaller indie films.

lmao saying that "they have have killed the market for smaller indie films" is blatantly untrue when you have places like A24, Blumhouse and Neon that continue to pump out films from up and coming directors, which open to great reception and/or strong returns on their budgets the majority of the time.

Not to mention the fact that plenty of stories that would have never been able to get made before are now getting the opportunity to be told; you think something like Moonlight could have been made 10, 20 years ago?

And while these films obviously don't have the same sort of theatrical releases as an MCU film, they still do get strong support from a lot of smaller theaters, a lot of the times they can even have even stronger theatrical averages than the biggest blockbusters of the year

I'm not saying that Disney doesn't have their share of shady tactics (what major studio doesn't?) but I don't see how the market for smaller indie films is dead in a year where A24 are able to release TWENTY ONE films.

A24 is killing indie cinema. They are not a film studio. They are a distributor that secures typically minor scale releases for indie funded films. They aren’t the sole proprietor in any way shape or form and the producers usually are not connected to the company.

In fact, they are as cannibalistic as the bigger film companies. More often then not they are cashing in on the clout they’ve gathered from releasing “indie” blockbusters to sell merch that the filmmakers do not profit from. Ranging from books, hoodies, shirts, hats, any dumb f***ing thing you can think of — a film distribution company is doing that.

Fox Searchlight is a million times bigger and more successful at having higher quality projects consecutively and would never stoop that low. A24 is anti-indie.

For all the movies they handle that you’ve heard about, there are at least 10 that they have mismanaged. UTSL leaked nearly a year in advanced due to their incompetence with properly scheduling releases for their lower slated titles. Then when it finally came time to release it, it was nearly cancelled all together.

They’re doing nothing miraculous for the industry other than proving how sheep minded teenagers and college students are who will spend $50 on a tote bag with their logo on it. There are hundreds of film distribution companies releasing great indie films, none of them cause as much hysteria as A24 because largely they aren’t American based so they don’t have the same opportunities to scam people for money.

Ultimately, A24 has only released maybe 2 substantial quality films this year at most - and, to discredit the artists behind that in an effort to give this company any more misguided and misdirected praise than it already has is entirely upsetting and bizarre.

Again. They specialize primarily in distributing films to cinemas. Just because they’re indie doesn’t make their agenda any less destructive.

The entire film industry operates on 'old ideas'. It isn't as woke as you think it is. You're just their latest marketing tool. Think.
