i love myself some Nina, but it’s genuinely embarrassing how Beyonce is pretty much the token artist around this site that people love to play contrarian and slander to act like they know more about music than they actually do

Just relistened to that performance that was posted on the third page and while she definitely has an impressive voice with an absurd dynamic behind it she lacks a style that is unique enough nor is it complex enough to display a wide array of narrative, psychological qualities (despite all the concept album things she did). I don't think that it's necessary to be extremely diverse to be a great singer she strikes me as a rather mediocre interpreter with a strong voice. Sure, I'm pissed about other inclusions but she is placed the highest out of all I don't think that deserve the praise. Overall, she might deserve a spot in the Top 200 even for me.

The most egregious thing for me is actually Ariana at #44.

“wide array of narrative, psychological qualities” comes off to me as fanciful wording for you simply aren’t moved by her singing which is purely a subjective thing, so im not exactly sure why that’s something you’re staking your critique on her singing, beyonce displays unprecedented breath control during her live performances, has an unparalleled vocal range and is extremely versatile, this isn’t even getting into the actual emotional value of her songs which tbf, we wouldn’t even get particularly far because it seems like i feel a lot more strongly about it when i listen to her than you do, so to each their own i suppose

it’s pretty important to be diverse in order to be considered a great singer (which is why im confused as to why Frank Ocean + Billie Eilish are even on this list) they literally only sing within their tessitura (comfortable vocal range) and display little to no ability to go beyond where they typically sing at, don’t get me wrong, they use their voices in a phenomenal way for their music, but when we’re talking about greatest singers, there’s a standard that should be followed and they don’t really meet it

beyonce is placed that high because she’s able to tastefully use the full dynamics of her voice + range to make great music, performs with it (combined with choreography mind you) and has shown that her voice can take different characters and textures to it (great voice control) she deserves to be placed that high. prince and ariana are definitely too low but the list is so bad i don’t even really wanna get into it substantially

narrative - A singer/songwriter for example, is usually trying to tell some sort of story. While sining they go through the various sections of the story but trying to express that throughout the voice and not necessarily through just the lyrics. Which is for example Dylan's main forte. He sounds like a bystander who is commenting on everything that is happening around him. You can also extend it with many more vocal acrobatics such as screams, adlibs whatever. Beyoncé made a concept album and she was rather okay at this imo.

psychological - It kind of goes with the "narrative" quality in such that a mental state is expressed throughout the singing. A mental state can be complex or rather simple but it's in a way someone sings and what emotions they try to evoke or better transmit.

breath control, dynamics etc.. all these are attributes that may help at interpreting or better expressing the music but they are not a dead end.

In fact, I am moved by her music but I find it a bit superficial tbh.
